Browns owner won't decide fate of GM, coach till season is over

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

BEREA: Browns owner Randy Lerner will wait until after the season to decide the future of coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Phil Savage, Lerner said this morning.

''I'm going to take the issues and concerns and criticisms very seriously and think through them and deal with them in January,'' Lerner said. ''Hopefully late January.''

With five games remaining, Lerner insisted that he has not made up his mind already about the futures of Crennel and Savage.

But in a rare interview that lasted more than an hour today, Lerner said on more than one occasion that he believes the team has the talent to reach the playoffs next year. That might not bode well for Crennel, who has led the Browns to a 4-7 record after going 10-6 in 2007.

''Yeah, I sense it could be,'' Lerner said. ''We've got to win and they've got to live up to their potential.''

Asked what the Browns have to build on, he said, ''I would like to think a very, very strong group of players who are underperforming.''

Those he mentioned as leaders who would be the foundation of that were nose tackle Shaun Rogers, left tackle Joe Thomas and left guard Eric Steinbach. He later added special teams ace Joshua Cribbs and long snapper Ryan Pontbriand.

Lerner said he has not made an overture to former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, now a CBS analyst.

Taking over the Browns after his father Al died in 2002, Lerner said he has no plans to sell the team and denied a rumor that he had received an offer from the owner of the sports apparel company Under Armour.

''It's a privilege beyond belief to be involved with a football team, especially your hometown team,'' Lerner said. ''I'm not prepared to throw in the towel at age 46 and suggest I can't get the job done.''

Asked how he felt at 4 p.m. on Sunday after another loss, Lerner said, ''It's sickening.'' He couldn't quantify his frustration level, saying it had reached the ''maximum.''

See ya Romeo, this statement by Lerner is a finger pointing right at the coaching. We need a coach who is going to light a fire under these guys!

Please, please keep everything as is. The browns are terrible, the coach is a laugh as well as the rest of the organization. I'm not a Browns fan, but I feel the fans pain. I have the dishonor of having loyalty to the team owned by Mike Brown. If the Bengals or Browns are to be successful, I think both teams need to completely clean house (including the owners)Cleveland fans are lucky, at least your owner has 1/2 a brain. Hope your pain ends soon. Mike Brown has a death grip and won't let go.

The season is over. What are you people stupid or what. If they can't keep a lead in a game then it is over. WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!! WE WANT A TEAM WE CAN BE PROUD OF AND THIS TEAM IS NOT IT. GET RID OF THE COACHING STAFF AND SOME OF THE LOSERS WHO CAN NOT CATCH A BALL. THEY GET PAID TO CATCH IT NOT DROP IT. BRING BACK STICKEM.

HEY CAPTAIN CAPITALS!!! I'm pretty sure everyone knows the season is over. I understand your frustration, i like you am a huge fan and i have the tattoos to prove it. Calling other fans stupid is just that, stupid. They want the same thing we do.

We need to rid the team of the "I" players and bring in some solid performers. No flashy guys at all. That's what screws up a team's chemistry.

lerner is right, makes no sense to do anything
right now, season is long gone, just play it out,
see who wants to play and who doesn"t. make your
changes after the last game is played

What was the point in holding a new conference to tell everyone the obvious?

I'm surprised that they were able to get an interview. And that Lerner knew the Browns were playing so bad, and had a reaction the question of "how did you feel at 4PM on Sunday."

Does he even go to the games? Sit in the owners box? I watch every Browns game and never see the guy shown on TV like many other owners. Maybe he is just such an unknown face that they don't bother.

Funny that he says he'll deal with it in January, hopefully late January like he still thinks the Browns could be in the playoffs. LOSER!

PS Yep, no reason to do anything now, the whole team should be blown up in the offseason, time to clean house.

It's about time we hear from Mr. Lerner. However, why wait until LATE January? The decisions should be made by noon on 12/29! You need as much advance time as you can get to begin your coaching search unless you've got something in the works NOW! You are correct to wait until this is over. it will serve no purpose to do anything now. It would just be worse.
The one thing I didn't see in the article about the interview was any admission of responsibility to the fans??? Mr. Lerner, WAKE UP!!! You need us more than we need a pathetic team to root for and then have it tear our hearts out year after year. A little consideration would be nice given the fact we support your organization w/ our hard earned dollars!
If you don't care about us then sell the team to someone who does. Your lack of action should show you don't care enough about the city and the fans. Next time let us hear from you!!

Revised 11/20 post:

1. Start Jerome Harrison at RB
2. Start Joshua Cribbs at WR
3. Cut Braylon "Baby" Edwards (Wants out of Clev. (again)/intentional drops)
4. Cut Jamal "One-Way Road-Grader" Lewis (free-up salary )
5. Implement West Coast Offense
6. Hire Jake's Crane to remove Large Sh*t Bag from Browns Stadium; Frog march Phil Savage from Browns Staduim during Half-Time festivities
7. RANDY LERNER: Fly to wherever Cowher is, hand him a blank check giving him full reign, then fly back to London and stay there until (see #9)
8. Rent Barge on Lake Erie to float out Cowher's "weed-outs" to an undisclosed destination for burial at sea.
9. Make Super-Bowl preparations by 2011.

P.S. There's another Large Sh*t Bag operating at Notre Dame posing as a Head Coach with identical ties as the Browns' Large Sh*t Bag. Rule #1: All Belichick disciples are not automatically qualified to be Head Coaches on any level.
