Starting job to be waiting for injured quarterback in training camp, Browns coach claims
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer
Published on Thursday, Nov 27, 2008
BEREA: Regardless of what Derek Anderson does in the final five games filling in for the injured Brady Quinn, Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Quinn will be the starter going into next year's training camp.
Of course, Crennel might not be making those decisions after Dec. 28, when the Browns finish the season against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.
He also could have been responding to owner Randy Lerner's comment Tuesday that it was time for the organization to pick a quarterback and stick with him.
Whatever is going on at Browns headquarters, the embattled Crennel finally snapped under the pressure of a 4-7 season Wednesday. He stunned a room full of media when he said Anderson wouldn't regain his starting job even if he finished the season 5-0, beginning with Sunday's home game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Anderson is 13-13 as a starter over three seasons, including 3-5 in 2008 before he was benched in favor of Quinn.
''I tell you. You guys are something, you really are,'' Crennel said. ''D.A. was the starter, you guys hated him. Quinn goes in and now you're telling me if D.A. lights it up, you want him to be the starter. I have decided that Quinn is going to be the starter. I'm sorry if you don't like that.''
That wasn't thrilling news for Anderson.
''I'll worry about it when it comes, when the situation arises,'' Anderson said. ''Obviously you can't worry about that now.''
Crennel said Quinn has a week to decide whether to undergo surgery for a fractured right index finger that also has tendon damage. A visit to noted orthopedist James Andrews on Tuesday and a re-evaluation by Browns specialists discovered the damage had worsened after Quinn played nearly three
quarters Sunday against the Houston Texans. He was lifted after his second interception and replaced by Anderson. Quinn was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.
He was originally hurt in the first quarter of a Nov. 17 victory over the Bills in Buffalo.
''It's something that I'm still praying about and trying to give my family a chance to talk about as well and figure out what will be best,'' Quinn said of the surgery. ''Some people feel the best way to let it heal is to rest it, put it in a splint and keep it immobilized and let the body do its work. Certain doctors feel that might be the best way.''
Quinn said it would have to be immobilized for six to eight weeks and then he still might need surgery if it doesn't heal properly.
Crennel said when Quinn's injury was discovered going into the Texans game, specialists laid out three options. Quinn could wear a splint all the time except for practice and games and continue to play, keep it in a splint for six weeks or undergo surgery.
Quinn said Andrews did not believe it was a mistake to play.
''That was my decision to go ahead and play,'' Quinn said.
After completing just 8-of-18 passes for 94 yards and a 21.3 rating against the Texans, Quinn has no regrets.
''Why would I ever regret playing?'' Quinn said. ''That was something that I was willing to risk. If I had a chance to do it over, I would do it again.''
Waiting until his 25th game to get a chance, the 22nd overall pick in the 2007 draft out of Notre Dame saw his season end with a 1-2 record as a starter. He completed 50.6 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions and a 66.6 rating.
''It's frustrating. I can't begin to tell you,'' Quinn said of his short stint after such a long wait. ''I'm hurting right now because I love to play the game. I wish I could be with my teammates. I feel bad for the fans because I really wanted to be out there and continue to grow in this league. It's frustrating. Hopefully this will allow me to grow stronger and something good will come from this.''
Receiver Braylon Edwards didn't seem worried about the transition back to Anderson, despite the quarterbacks' difference in personalities.
''Derek is more loose, more silly. It works for him and it works for the team,'' Edwards said. ''Brady is the opposite. Brady is more serious, he's more stern. Both guys get it done in a different way.''
Crennel said he's seen enough in three games to determine that Quinn can be a legitimate starter.
''I'm impressed with what the kid has done on the football field, off the football field, the way he handles himself, the way he's run the team,'' Crennel said. ''Not getting rattled, being able to manage the game, I like all of that about him. I like the kid a lot.''
Laughing it off
Last week, Savage responded to a fan's e-mail with an abbreviated expletive. He made light of the blunder on his weekly radio show on WTAM (1100-AM).
''I think people can see through the farce and what's happened in this situation,'' Savage said. ''It was a molehill that turned into a mountain. I'm sorry about it, I've apologized to the fan and it's over with.''
But Savage couldn't resist joking: ''I did get word from the FCA that they've revoked my membership card. I'm on probation for a year now with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. But Athletes in Action said they would be more than willing to forgive me and they would gladly accept any donations.''
Brownies
Tight end Darnell Dinkins is out for Sunday with a high left ankle sprain. Fullback Charles Ali suffered a fractured rib against the Texans and missed practice, but Crennel said he should be able to play. . . . Linebacker Titus Brown was promoted from the practice squad, and receiver Steve Sanders was waived. Quarterback Richard Bartel, who spent 2007 on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, took Sanders' spot.

The question is not is Brady's job safe, it's whether RC will even be there. Hopefully not.
Bill Cowher will make that decision on BQ next season when he takes over as GM/Coach of the Browns. Crennel is a useless as a tit on a boar hog these days. He is gone at season's end and so is GM Savage. The real shame is they allowed BQ to play last week and he injured the finger even more. The Browns sure don't understand how to manage, coach, and play football.
Another poor decision by RAC. Why on earth would he make a statement as to who would be the starting QB in 2009?! What has EITHER QB done to deserve that position? RAC generally doesn't give any information and now he gives too much? He will be gone at the end of '08 anyway.
I applaud RAC for announcing his starting QB for 2009 now. It's about time he acted decisively on something... anything.
But it's too late, baby, yeah it's too late...
I've never posted all caps till now :
BRADY ! DO NOT HAVE SURGERY IN CLEVELAND, OR BY ANYBODY ASSOCIATED WITH THE BROWNS. DO IT THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY !
BE SAFE.
And in a related story, the Beacon Journal has announced that Terry Pluto's job is safe.
And Grumpy, you don't understand anything about ANYTHING! Listen moron, Cowher is NOT coming here. Please have your wife make sure you take your medication. And don't forget hte Geritol!
And in a related story, grump is wrong once again!
pete - NBC Sports article has Bill Cowher signed, sealed, and delivered to the Browns for next season. Don't you read anything but the ABJ website ?
Derek, after the season, GET THE HE## OUT of there and run like the blazes. Don't look back. Don't even think about it. Go to Savage or whomever and get a trade done. Leave them with Quinn, and only Quinn, and let them stew in the juices mediocrity, wondering why it always ends the same way. There are a lot of football teams in neeed of a QB with good throwing skills. Get with a good QB coach to refine your skills and go where you will be appreciated. The way you have been, and are being treated, is off the charts inexcusable. Unless your masochistic or something, you should get out of this loony house and get as far away as possible.
You clowns fans are so pathetic.
Matt, you're a tool.
Anyway, with that out of the way, why on earth is Crennel talking about next season already anyway? Obviously, Anderson is going to start for the rest of this year. Focus on that, there's no need to say anything else. He's an idiot, and hopefully he and Savage will be gone by January.
During what was to be Nick Skorich's final game as Head Coach of the Browns at old Municipal Stadium before being fired almost immediately after the games' conclusion, a brilliant fan hung a "dummy" body of a man (in effigy)over the railing from the upper deck which had a sign on it that read: "Nick"...
Therefore the Large Sh*t Bag who currently holds the title of Browns Head Coach should have the same honor bestowed upon him on Sunday, Dec. 21st during the Cincinatti game, the last Browns home game this year. But the problem with attempting to duplicate the Skorich "effigy" is it would require the hiring of Jake's Crane to lift that size of "Dummy" into Browns Stadium.
P.S. A photo of the Skorich "Effigy" was printed in the Beacon the following day. I hope it's still in the Archives somewhere.
HOPE DA GETS TRADED NEXT SEASON DUE TO THE FACT THAT PLAYING FOR CLEVELAND IS NOTHING BUT A NEGATIVE FOR HIS CAREER! LAST SEASON DA GAVE CLEVELAND MORE TO TALK ABOUT THAN ANY PLAYER IN THE RECENT PAST! SURE HE AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS HAD NOT PLAYED AS WELL AS THEY COULD (SOPHMORE SLUMP)BUT WE KNOW THAT THEY CAN AND WILL PLAY UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL AS THEY GELL AS A TEAM! I WILL SAY ONCE MORE THAT WITH ANOTHER YEAR UNDER HIS BELT DA WILL BE A STAR! BRADY SUCKS! WITH A NEW COACH THE BROWNS WILL BE THE TEAM OF THE FUTURE! EVEN WHEN STRUGGLING DA PUT HIS TEAM IN THE POSSITION TO WIN! REDSKINS ETC. MARK MY WORD IF CLEVELAND TRADES DA THEY WILL REGRET IT DEARLY! NORM SHS OREGON #41
