Strong safety Sean Jones puts losing season aside, demonstrates his ability

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

BEREA: Just two games remain in a disappointing 4-10 season, but Browns strong safety Sean Jones doesn't seem to have given up.

In the final year of his contract, Jones had his personal goals sidetracked by arthroscopic knee surgery on Sept. 11 that forced him to miss four games. He knows his play will be evaluated by prospective employers, which he hopes include the Browns.

''I'm excited about these last two games, getting my resume out there. Hopefully the Browns keep me,'' Jones said Wednesday. ''You never know about that situation. I just want to play good football.''

Jones doesn't seem discouraged by the fact that the Browns have made no effort to re-sign him. That would be difficult with General Manager Phil Savage's job on the line, along with coach Romeo Crennel.

''I don't have any control over that. I let my agents deal with that kind of stuff,'' Jones said. ''I'll just play football. I'll find out eventually.''

Jones ranks sixth on the team in tackles with 65, along with three interceptions and a forced fumble. He made perhaps his most athletic play of the season Monday night on some trickery called by Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid. In the end zone, Jones intercepted receiver DeSean Jackson's pass for receiver Hank Baskett, thwarting a drive to the Browns' 7.

''When they went to the wildcat package, the guy ran at [Jones] and then went up. He anticipated what might be happening and he was able to lay out and make a good interception,'' Crennel said.

''I pride myself in being where I'm supposed to be on the field and making plays,'' Jones said. ''I'm an athletic safety.''

Injury update

Crennel said tight end Kellen Winslow (high ankle sprain) would not play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Quarterback Carson Palmer (elbow) has been declared out for the Bengals.

Among the Browns missing practice were punter Dave Zastudil (right knee tendinitis) and linebacker Leon Williams (knee). Receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh (hand) was among the Bengals sitting out.

Crennel didn't know if tight end Steve Heiden, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against the Eagles, would be ready for training camp in 2009. He's scheduled for surgery today.

Heiden was placed on injured reserve, along with rookie linebacker Beau Bell, who will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this week.

Hubbard called up

Receiver Paul Hubbard, a sixth-round pick from Wisconsin, was called up from the practice squad and hopes to get a chance to play. He has experience with third-string quarterback Ken Dorsey, now the Browns' starter.

''We definitely do have some kind of chemistry because all through preseason that's who I was catching balls from. Hopefully we can carry that over,'' Hubbard said.

Brownies

Browns left guard Eric Steinbach was named a third alternate to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday. ''This is the fourth year in a row I've been some sort of alternate; I think I'm a lifer,'' Steinbach said. ''But I'll take it.'' . . . Also signed was tight end John Madsen, an undrafted free agent from Utah who spent most of three seasons with the Oakland Raiders. Linebacker David Holloway was signed to the practice squad.
