Familiar faces Carl Smith and Rick Lyle will return to Berea as new Browns coach Eric Mangini announced the hiring of five assistants Thursday.
Smith spent 2001-03 as the Browns' quarterbacks coach under Butch Davis and takes over that assignment again. Lyle, who played defensive line for the Browns in 1994-95, will be the assistant strength and conditioning coach.
They will be joined by defensive line coach Bryan Cox, defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson and defensive quality control coach Andy Dickerson.
Cox, Henderson, Dickerson and Lyle worked under Mangini for the past three years with the New York Jets.
''These men are outstanding teachers and their energy and expertise will have an immediate impact on our team,'' Mangini said in a statement.
They bring the number to five ex-Jets assistants following Mangini. Quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll was hired as offensive coordinator. Mangini's staff now numbers eight.
Smith had spent the past two weeks at USC, where he was to coach quarterbacks and call plays. He tutored Trojans quarterbacks in 2004 when USC won the national championship and Matt Leinart captured the Heisman Trophy. Smith worked with USC coach Pete Carroll at North Carolina State and with the New England Patriots.
In the NFL, Smith also worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2005-06, offensive coordinator) and New Orleans Saints (1986-96). In the college ranks, Smith also coached at Lamar, Southwestern Louisiana, Colorado and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Lyle played in the NFL for 10 years for the Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets and New England Patriots, winning the Super Bowl in 2003 with the Patriots.
Cox built a reputation as an intimidating linebacker during his 12-year career with the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, the Jets, the Patriots and the New Orleans Saints. He played in 165 games, starting 144.
Henderson, a second-round pick in 1991, spent eight seasons as a defensive back with the Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and Jets. He played in Super Bowls with the Bills and Patriots. He started out as the Jets' director of player development in 2006 before becoming assistant defensive backs coach in '07 and taking over the unit in '08.
Dickerson took the same path to the NFL as Mangini, beginning as a training camp intern with the Washington Redskins in 2003 before going to Tufts as a graduate assistant. He also worked in the Patriots' operations department in 2004-05.

Bryan Cox! Now there is some attitude!
Great hire of Cox. Need his fire and discipline.
