Browns cut linebacker Peek from roster

He's slowed by injury; six others are released

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

If Antwan Peek is to complete his tough road back from a torn patella tendon, he'll have to do it with another team.

The six-year veteran linebacker was one of seven players let go by the Browns today.

Along with Peek, quarterback Ken Dorsey and defensive back Terry Cousin had their contracts terminated, while quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, punter Mike Dragosavich, kicker Jason Reda and offensive lineman Eric Young were waived.

Peek had just returned to the field after knee surgery when he tore the patella in his right knee in practice before the season opener against Dallas. Seen frequently in the locker room in December, Peek had been upbeat about his rehab.

Signed as a free agent from Houston in 2007, Peek was expected to be the bookend pass rusher opposite Kamerion Wimbley, but Peek hurt his knee in the first game in '07. He still managed to play in 14 games that season, but recorded just four sacks.

Dorsey spent most of the past three seasons as the Browns' third quarterback, but flopped when he got his chance to play after season-ending injuries to Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. Dorsey also finished '08 on injured reserve and Gradkowski took over, but he fared no better in the finale at Pittsburgh.

Cousin, a 12-year veteran signed last May, was expected to provide needed depth in the secondary after Daven Holly blew out his knee and Leigh Bodden was traded to Detroit. Instead, Cousin became the cornerback foes picked on. He recorded one interception and two pass breakups.

Dragosavich and Reda signed future contracts with the Browns last month, while Young spent '08 on the non-football injury list.

Dorsey was like a free quarterbacks coach/assistant offensive coordinator. He was better at that then actually playing quarterback. He will get back in the NFL, mark my words, but as an assistant coach.

This is the beginning. Mangini is turning the page on the Browns story and he will be moving others as well in preparation for the draft. With these moves, we see openings for cornerback, linebacker and quarterback. Lets hope Mangini does a better job at his picks than others have had.

Ok Doug. Anyone else? That's only half the team. You truely think we can pick up players better than most of these guys in the FA market or the draft. It takes an almost three offseasons to replace what you want to cut.

Just be patient.

What's up Doug? No hands of stone Braylon Edwards on your hit list?

Don't worry, some of the released players will end up playing in Super Bowl 2010.If Mangini knew what to do, he would have never been RELEASED from his prior team.

Yeah poor Leigh. He was a 3rd stringer on a 0-16 team. you have to give Phil credit on that one folks, Leigh Boden 3rd for Shaun Rodgers? Good move.

I do hope we can rid ourselves of Braylon. Maybe we could get another 4th round for him??

Doug,

What, no Rex Hadnot on your list? And why Ryan Tucker? The only game he played in, we owned the Giants.

Robaire Smith will hang around. He's a good player when he's healthy.

Chrisshrider,

Tucker was probably the one I least wanted to put on that list, but you actually proved my point. The guy just can't stay healthy and he makes as much money as a starter. We could use that money on someone else.

Smith is a close second. I like him, but once again he can't stay healthy. As Tony Z mentioned, a lot of these guys will probably hang around until we find someone better, but they need to go.

As far as Braylon goes, he's just got too much talent to let go. We're too thin at WR as it is and I doubt we'll make a serious run at Housh. I'm not convinced he's a number 1 anyway. I think Bobby Engram could be a nice add. Here's a question. If Crabtree's available and Curry and the DE from FSU are gone, do we take him.

Finally, can the Beacon knock it off with the dentist guy popups? They're ridiculous.
