BEREA: Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan doesn't believe fans will embrace a protest planned by two longtime season ticket holders for the Monday night game Nov. 16 against the visiting Baltimore Ravens.
Mike Randall of Massillon and Tony Schaefer of Sandusky, aka ''Dawg Pound Mike'' and ''Mobile Dawg,'' want fans to wait until after kickoff to go to their seats, to show their displeasure over the state of the franchise.
The Browns (1-6) have lost 12 of their past 13 games and fans see little hope for the future under new coach Eric Mangini.
''This is the Cleveland fans. They sit through snowstorms, all kinds of crap,'' Ryan said Friday. ''I saw something they're not going to show up. [Expletive], this is Cleveland. They're going to show up and back this team. It doesn't look like we've got Jim Brown back there right now, but it's not easy and we're going to keep fighting and get better.
''Our fans are great fans and they deserve better and we're going to give 'em better. I keep telling you that, but I believe it.''
Ryan might not have understood that Randall and Schafer are not advocating that fans don't attend the game. But Ryan said the idea of a protest angered him.
''Yeah, it [ticks] me off, because the bottom line is this is the Cleveland Browns. This is a town that's tough and loves football,'' he said. ''Nobody's happy. I hate me, too. So they hate me, too. It doesn't mean you turn your back. I've got a kid who flunked a class one time. I don't turn my back on him; I go get him a tutor and help him. Now he's a straight-A student as far as you know.
''Bottom line is a little adversity happens, you don't turn your back. You fight, you rub hands together and you fight harder. That's what we're going to do on defense. It starts with Chicago, not after the [Nov. 8] open week.''
Dawson returning?
Browns kicker Phil Dawson appears on the verge of returning after missing the past five games with a right calf injury. He kicked during the first 30 minutes of practice open to the media, which hadn't happened on a Friday since he was hurt Sept. 27.
He was listed as probable on the injury report.
''We'll see. I'm optimistic,'' Dawson said after practice. ''We'll talk to the doctors. The coaches will make the decision. No one will be more excited than I will be if I get the green light.
''I just want to play again. This sitting around watching is for the birds. A chance to be out there with my teammates is what I'm hoping to get accomplished.''
It also seems to be a good sign that Dawson has been constantly checking the Weather Channel for Sunday's forecast.
''[It says] 51, sunny and southwest winds at 6 [mph] right now. It's changed every day,'' he said. He added that Soldier Field was resodded two weeks ago and the Bears have played one game there since.
Dawson's replacement, Billy Cundiff, has gone 6-for-6 on field goals in Dawson's absence, but his longest is 31 yards.
Ryan disses Rodgers
Ryan has already criticized Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards this season. Friday it was Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who drew his ire.
After Sunday's game, Rodgers said the Packers' scout-team linebacker ran the blitz better than Browns strong safety Abe Elam on Donald Driver's 71-yard touchdown reception.
''That stuff like that, it just doesn't sit real good with me,'' Ryan said. ''I guess he can say what he wants to say because he won. I respect the guys that talk before the game. The guys who tell you how much they're going to kick your butts and then they do it or you can shut them up. A guy like that? Whatever. He can say whatever he wants. I don't care about him. I've got no time for a guy like that.''
Lewis becomes mentor
Running back Jamal Lewis, 30, is dismayed by the Browns' poor start and an offense that shows no signs of its 2007 success. So he's resigned to helping the young players.
''Nobody signs up to go out and lose games, but I'm an older player, I've been there, my job is to help a lot of these young guys so hopefully next year or the year after, it's a different tune,'' Lewis said. ''Hopefully, it comes sooner than that, but you've got to handle things. It's reality.
''I'm happy to be here and do my job. I just want to work and bring everybody together and bring it to the field on Sunday.''
Asked whether he feels pressure to help an offense that ranks 31st in the league, Lewis said: ''You want to, but the ball is not in my hands. There's nothing I can really do. All I can do is get into the younger players and do my job and hopefully they can follow my work ethic.''
Maiava fined
The NFL fined Browns rookie linebacker Kaluka Maiava $5,000 for unnecessary roughness against Packers receiver Greg Jennings on Sunday. Maiava was penalized on the play.
Injury report
Listed as questionable for the Browns are tight ends Robert Royal (hamstring, finger), Steve Heiden (knee) and Greg Estandia (knee), offensive lineman Rex Hadnot (knee) and defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman (groin). Among the probables for the Bears is defensive tackle Tommie Harris (knee), who was held out last week.

LOL. . . .
So, Ryan measures 13 years a little adversity. Amazing how these guys come to town and all think this stench is just temporary. It is for them. They'll add to the stench then move on in a couple years.
As long as the check don't bounce. That's how you define the loyalty of today's mercenary athlete/coach
I'm a 29 year season ticket holder. I won't even go.
Awesome Teddy.
i guess mangini told rob ryan to say something in the press how much he hates the idea of a protest, i would of rather had king mangini come out and say it himself. its really interesting that king mangini wont let the gm talk or anyone else until he wants something stupid said, so he sends ryan out to say it. i think there should be a protest with no one going to the game just one big tailgate party. lets fire mangini now and get bill cowher in here, cowher said to learner last year ( can you give me a year ) randy send your plane to cowher with a blank check
The fans show up, too bad the team doesn't.
