Former University of Maryland inside linebackers Eric Barton and D'Qwell Jackson were supposed to be linchpins of the Browns' defense this season and were voted co-captains.
That plan took another hit Tuesday when Barton was placed on injured reserve. ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported last week that Barton learned he had a bulging disc in his neck after suffering what was announced as a shoulder injury late in the first half of a Nov. 1 loss at Chicago.
Barton reportedly sought a second opinion and was considering surgery.
Jackson was lost for the year Oct. 18 at Pittsburgh, suffering a pectoral injury near the end of the second quarter against the Steelers that required surgery.
Barton, 32, an 11-year veteran, was signed as an unrestricted free agent from the New York Jets on March 13. He leads the Browns in tackles with 58 (36 solos), with two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.
''I feel bad for Eric because I know how much passion he has for the game and what it means to him,'' said Browns coach Eric Mangini. ''His ability to run the defense and allow those around him to play better will be greatly missed.''
The loss of Barton should mean a more prominent role for Nordonia High School product Jason Trusnik, acquired from the New York Jets in the Oct. 7 trade for receiver Braylon Edwards.
Trusnik started at outside linebacker against the Bears, with David Bowens moving inside. Until that point, Trusnik had played primarily special teams.
''To come home and not know how it was going to be at first, and now to play a primary role not only on special teams but on defense, I'm trying to take advantage of the opportunity and make the best situation for myself, the defense and the team,'' Trusnik said Monday.
Trusnik's mother lives in Twinsburg, and he said he feels he could fill his own cheering section for Monday's home game against the Baltimore Ravens.
''I have enough family around here to do that,'' he said.
Rookies Kaluka Maiava, a fourth-round pick from USC, and David Veikune, a second-round choice from Hawaii, will also get some time inside.
In another roster move, the Browns signed running back Thomas Brown to the practice squad and released receiver Darnell Jenkins. Brown was a sixth-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons out of Georgia.

Browns sign Thomas Brown to the practice squad.....
Interesting.....makes one wonder if Lewis could be flat out released in the near future if Harrison plays well the next couple weeks...
