BEREA:A fan protest and a ranting running back. A coach fighting for his job, a young quarterback fighting for his future and an opponent fighting for redemption.
It's hard to tell whether football or the controversies swirling around the home team will take center stage Monday night when the Browns (1-7) host the Baltimore Ravens (4-4) on Monday Night Football.
ESPN producer Jay Rothman will try to keep it light, even showing a drawing of Browns hall of fame running back Leroy Kelly that analyst Jon Gruden made as a youngster growing up in Sandusky. Two former Ohio college quarterbacks — Gruden at Dayton and Ron Jaworski at Youngstown State — will be ready with detailed analysis of Brady Quinn, the Dublin, Ohio, native and former Notre Dame quarterback who is back in the Browns' starting lineup after being yanked after 10 quarters.
But even Rothman acknowledged, ''If there's a riot, our job is to cover a riot.''
That's not likely, but fans are angry and will be fueled from hours of tailgating. Then there's the protest organized by longtime season-ticket holders Mike Randall of Massillon and Tony Schafer of Sandusky. They want fans to wait until after kickoff to go to their seats, to show their displeasure with the state of the franchise and owner Randy Lerner's refusal to address them publicly.
''All systems are go,'' Randall said Sunday. ''I don't know what's going to happen. I'm still getting e-mails saying, 'Don't shut it down.' ''
Browns Pro Bowl return specialist Joshua Cribbs doesn't believe the majority of the fans will take part.
''This is a football town. I doubt if it comes down to the fans doing that,'' Cribbs said. ''I think the protest is just a way for the fans to speak to the owner. It had a tremendous effect on our owner. Their point was well-taken.''
Rothman said he doesn't think ESPN can ignore the protest.
''When we open and the helmets crash and you see a wide shot of the stadium, if the seats are empty, we'll probably have a couple cameras in the concourse to show where fans are,'' Rothman said.
Football-wise, the Ravens have lost four of their last five, but those setbacks came against Cincinnati (twice), Minnesota and New England. The Ravens are 1-5 on the road on Monday night and have lost five consecutive games on Monday Night Football.
The Browns had an extra week to prepare and embattled coach Eric Mangini went 3-0 after bye weeks with the New York Jets in 2006-08. It will be interesting to watch how he handles running back Jamal Lewis, who ripped him for his long, physical practices on Thursday.
The struggling Browns are looking for a fresh start.
''Coming off the bye and with a new quarterback, doing some different things on offense hopefully will jump-start everything and give us the improvement we want,'' Browns left tackle Joe Thomas said.
Cribbs believes a lot can be salvaged.
''Finishing strong and play[ing] good football to show we didn't give up on the season,'' he said.
The apparent mismatch between the Ravens and Browns does not worry Rothman.
''I've done enough of these type games. . .you go out and it's a movie in the making,'' Rothman said.
Punter signed
With punter Dave Zastudil listed as questionable with a sore right knee, the Browns signed free agent Reggie Hodges, a Ball State product selected in the sixth round in the 2005 draft by St. Louis. Hodges has appeared in 24 games with the Rams, Philadelphia Eagles (2005), New York Jets (2008) and Tennessee Titans (2009). He kicked in four games for the Titans this season, averaging 39.5 yards on 22 attempts, before being waived on Oct. 27.

Sign Josh Cribbs to a new contract, he still wants to be in Cleveland, for some reason.
Well I would like to get a closure on this Mangini battering , with everyone acting as if he is the anti-Christ . Maybe the NFLPA looking into the matter will bring out the truth one way or another . Then we can get back to the task of building a team .
The only swirling going on is this team down the toilet.
Josh - Get the Heck out of town before you get hurt! Sign with a team going somewhere.
Marla:
All this conflict is Media induced. Whith you, McManamon, Grossi, Mary Kay and Doersuk the lead sharks in the Media cesspool.
Why don't you and you cohorts, report on some insight as to how the rooks looked in practice this week, how are the players recovering from injuries, or anything, anything objective at all.
The only thing we read from you sharks is the daily vitriol about getting Mangini fired !!!
It has become nauseating !!!
hank/naples,
Do you read the PD? There was a comment today that struck me as hilarious. If you're not familiar, this is a question written to Tony Grossi. I guess Mangini doesn't like to give interviews to guys who were criticizing his every move before he even unpacked all of his belongings in Berea.
"Hey, Tony: So has Mangini ever sat down with you (or any other local writers) the way he did with Clark Judge? Is he trying to repair his image? And is a one-on-one in the offing for y'all? -- David King, Joelton, Tenn.
Hey, David: Mangini has sat down with just about every local writer except three -- Pat McManamon of the Akron Beacon Journal, Tom Withers of the Associated Press and me."
Agreed Hank. A lot of times these coaches get fired due to pressure from the fans, who feed off of media stories. In effect the more articles that paint coaches in a negative light, the more likely they are to be fired.
Mike Randall,
I'm glad that all systems are go. Will Chad Johnson be sitting next to you in the Dawg Pound once you take your seat?
Hey Jason:
Great stuff, thanks for the heads up. He is sooo freking spot on. I like Mangini even more now, thanks
Dave:
It is absolutely fact. These sharks mentioned have a personal vendetta against Mangini. I have read them from day one and the all have a the same motive; to get Mangini fired !!!
What the fans (frontrunners/wagoneers)don't realize is, what "top football exec." will be willing to dive into this Media cesspool?
The Media is cultivating (perpetuating)Clevelands losers culture !!
I have written to a couple of sport editors regarding their "reporters".
Jason:
I also wrote an e-mail to those two IDIOTS, Randall and Schafer, calling them idiots for insulting "their" team in front of a national audience and demanding to know what suggestion would they have for Lerner so the Browns can become winners. Their reply was that every one is entitled to their opinon and no suggestions.
What self glorified losers !!!! And the dumb "fans" listen to them.
Hank,
That Florida sun has your brain a little fried. If you are content with a loser of a coach. This city deserves a winner. Big Dawg and and Schafer just put alot of emotion into this franchise. Obviously the losing does not bother you but it does to us true fans. Why should the fans be content with this coach. He asked us to be patient. Why should we be. He was not a bit patient with Brady Quinn. This guy has not really been given a chance to grow with this team. Mangini was fired in NY for a reason. He is from the Belichick tree. Obviously Bill learned from his mistakes in Cleveland and admitted as much. Mangenious has not learned. He has a dictatorial personality and is afraid to admit mistakes he has made. When DA was quarterbacking us to our only win with his NFL worst of all time performance against the Buffalo Bills. He continued to start this guy game after game after game no matter how stupid he looked for that decision to bench the young QB. He was trying to get a win with a QB that was just getting worse and worse just to justify his decision and say I told you so. If Mangini would change his play calling or offensive coordinator switch up the plays, this team might have a shot at winning. I don't think he will ever admit he was wrong in benching Quinn so fast but its as if he wanted him to fail. DA had a great year a few years ago but the prior coaching staff is much better than the one that is in place now. Mangini has a big ego and it is definitely needing some food to feed his big ego. Well, We are the laughing stock of the NFL and it does not feel the least bit good. I suggest you root for the Bucs if you want to lose because true Browns fan want to win. The sooner the better. I have my own protest going. I refuse to wear Browns gear until they get rid of Mangini. I hope they do get the fans to stay out in the concourse until after kickoff. Cleveland deserves better than what is being sold to those paying fans. Just give BQ a chance to grow.
Sean,
1. Team was 4-12 last season. Yep, let's build on that foundation.
2. You are quoting cliches on Bellichick learning from his mistakes and Mangini not. Bellichick is still releasing his star players (Milloy) and deactivating big-name players (A. Thomas). Nothing has changed except the number of rings. Funny how winning changes perception on things.
3. How is NYJ doing now? If Mangini is such a bad coach, you'd think the Jets would be doing much better, especially with all of the talent they brought in.
4. Most fans, even Quinn fans, agreed with subbing in DA, though I will agree that he stayed with him too long. Quinn wasn't moving the ball. You can debate whether 3 and out is better than turnovers, but at least DA would take chances downfield. Now that DA has had his shot, I hope Quinn loosens up and looks downfield.
Pittsburgh SUCKS !!! Nice to see the Bengals win that game with a final play that left little ben FLAT ON HIS BACK.
Where are all the sqealer fans today??
As I have said earlier, there will be NO REPEAT !! Ha ha ladies!!
oops, squealer
Hey squealer fans, get the brooms out, YOU'VE BEEN SWEPT !!
Or did Cincy just use that turrible towelette ?? Ha ha !!!
Hey squealers, get the brooms out, YOU'VE BEEN SWEPT !!! Ha ha !!
...Or did Cincy just wipe that up with the turrible towelette?? Ha ha !!!
The Angler,
That sound you hear is all of the cash registers around Northeast Ohio ringing up return transactions.
TOJ...I like that !!! That is NICE !!!
TOJ...I think you are right. Instead of defacing the Browns today, most squealers fans are out returning much of their merchandise.
Steeler fan here-
There are just TOO many articles about how BAD the Browns stink to keep up with!
Angler and TOJ- Sorry about you guys not having a team again this year. If it helps you to hate on Steeler fans, then so be it. It is all you've got.
Maybe next year. (You are probably so tired of hearing that)
jenkins...yep yer right. Go wipe up those Bengals with your sh*t stained towelette. Ha Ha !!!
NO REPEAT THIS YEAR LADIES !!!
Really it is OK jenkins...sh*ttsburgh didn't have a team for something like 50 years.
jenkins,
Yeah, it does. It's quite amusing to see people trip over themselves to reveal much they lack self-confidence and conviction. It transcends football.
''When we open and the helmets crash and you see a wide shot of the stadium, if the seats are empty, we'll probably have a couple cameras in the concourse to show where fans are,'' Rothman said.
Of course there will be empty seats at this time in the broadcast. Kickoff is still several minutes away. Add to that the fact that Browns crowds are typically late arriving anyway.
Besides not really having any discernible point, this is another huge reason why this "protest" is nothing more than a way for DPM to get publicity.
Frank,
100% right on every point. The late crowd thing is annoying. I like tailgating as much as anyone, but a lot of the fans have to get that extra 20-30 minutes in. What does it matter if you've been there since 8:00-9:00 AM (earlier for others)?
I see Troy P. was injured in the Bengals WHOOPING of the squealers, was that a hang nail or did someone pull his hair?? Ha ha !!
@TOJ - I think the late crowds have something to do with the stadium staff. I went to the Blizzard game against the Bills two years ago. The security staff wasn't prepared to handle people wearing coats. I guess the NE Ohio natives are accustomed to sub-zero weather with 40 MPH winds and the guards assumed the would be showing up without shirts.
The stadium crew failed to salt around the stadium and on the concourse stairs. Since we were in the last row, getting up the concourse stairs was quite the journey.
Although we had a good time at the game, I was very disappointed in facility management. I wrote an e-mail complaining about it and received an offer for season tickets in response.
The Browns are broken from the front office all the way down to the people working the front gates or doing maintenance.
Oh well. I figure they pull a major upset tonight like they did against the Giants.
I just got a new Hi Def. I can't wait to see Chansi Stuckey and Jason Trusnik in glorious color with super pixels.
This is a big event.
I hope they show the Bone Lady and have a good blimp shot of the Sowell Mansion.
Khen,
That might have been the case for that game, but I've been to plenty of games in nice weather with the same issue. I think it's a combination of little excitement for the product on the field and huge excitement for the festivities outside of the stadium.
Sean:
Look, first off, forget about trees and concentrate on people. Mangin is a totally different person than Crennel and thats why he was hired, comprende?
Second of all, Mangini should be applauded for taking on such a HERCULIAN JOB as changing the culture, the team, the whole organiztion, even the building for crying out loud !!!
ANDlast but not least,I don't think you have any idea what kind of losers culture the Media sharks, and wogoneer/frontrunner frauds for fans have cultivated the last ten plus years in CLeveland.
You must know that in order to cultive ANYTHING, first you must have fertile land? So how can you say that Mangini does not have any patience when you, and the rest of the wagoners demand a wining franchize in half a season OR LESS?
Lokk, I can go on, and on, giving names and examples of how irrational and UNFAIR and INJUST, and just PLAIN WRONG the CLEVELAND media SHARKS and frontrunner fans even before he got off the plane.
Give him HALF the time you gave Crennel and he WILL make Cleveland proud!!!!!!!!
Get rid of the daugs dogs or dawgs. Browns need new fans and new image.
If you think it is the media that creates this atmosphere, guess again. I'm a life long Browns fan, but have lived in Chicago the past 20 years. I only see the Team play a few times a year and I don't generally read any of the local Ohio papers. However, I watched the Browns vs Bears game and went online to read what the local media was wriring. The Browns were pathetic against a not very good Bears Team. This wasn't a young team, or a team trying to learn a new system, but just an embarassment. I wanted to see if I was the only one thinking that Mangini had to go.
To be clear, I don't blame Mangini because it all starts at the top. I thought it demonstrated bad management when Lerner hired the coach before the GM or a (hopefully) President. I've hired a few management teams over the years and I would never start by hiring "middle management" and basically having that person "choose" their manager. Strong organizations start with a vision and strategy at the top and then all decisions (including coaching and players) flow from that vision/strategy.
Unfortunately, now that Mangini has been given so much authority in the organization it will be very difficult to scale it back and put in place the appropriate management Team. Most individuals are unable to handle what essentially is a demotion and it is generally much better to just wipe the slate clean and do it right.
The Team is a mess and my evaluation of Lerner now rests on whether he will be able to admit his mistake and start over or if he will subject all the fans to 5 years of agony before he ends up firing Mangini.
I can't wait for history to repeat itself with Mangini.
New coach comes to town, tries to create a winning team, not given the support and tools needed to make it happen, fails (surprise surprise), gets fired, goes somewhere else and WINS!
Authority, I agree, but this will never happen with Mangini. He will never win as a head coach anywhere.
I tell you what, it don't take long for those squealer fans to go into hiding.
NICE SWEEP LADIES !!! GO BENGALS !!!
Steve,
Do two of his first three years count?
2006: 10-6
2007: 4-12 (just like the Browns dream season of 2008)
2008: 9-7
Yeah, I'll take that three-year run of records.
I would consider sucking to be a pretty big distraction.
@ QuestionAuth: Dont forget "Promising, young quarterback gets beat into early retirement due to lack of blocking and recieving"...
Something about those Orange Helmets we all love. 10 years they've been back, and terrible every year but 2. How'd we go from 10-6, to one of the worst teams in the league, to the worst team in the League?? Oh we traded our only good corner after that year, Leigh Bodden, he wasn't great, but better than what we got, Traded Sean Jones, our best Defensive Back. Traded Two TOP FIVE TALENT PICKS, Winslow, and Edwards. What did we get Corey Williams, (BUST) Sean Rodgers, Good when he feels like playing, and a bunch of NO TALENT, GOOD CHARACTER PLAYERS..Good Job Mangini..For all you still on the MANGINI bandwagon, It's the Reporters responsiblity as the voice for the Disgruntled fans, that know this offseason will be a great one for bringing in an experience SUPERBOWL winning coach, and GM..Mangini had his chance, and every decision he has made, has been not only bad but TERRIBLE..
TOJ,
Good point on Mangini's 3 year record in NY. I don't get where all these people are saying "he was fired because he sucked, and couldn't win". Really, 2 winning season in 3 years, average record 8-8. While that isn't great, its better than any record the Browns have had in 10 years.
Mangini was a scapegoat when the Favre expirement failed. Or was canned because he complained about that move.
I'm not 100% behind Mangini, but I think it would be good to give him a shot. 8 games, or even one catastrophe of a season shouldn't count. Then we just start over.
PS The media isn't to blame, it all starts with Lerner. He made some really bad moves in hiring coaches and GM, and now must decide how long to stick with those.
Yawning...
Browns play the browns tonight...
ORRVILLE RED RIDERS FOOTBALL TEAM CAN BEAT BOTH !
Its right there in your post The_Origainal_Jason.
He led the team he took over to a 10 win season. After Mangini started making his roster moves the Jets sucked in his secon season. Then the Owner handed him a ProBowl caliber QB, and in his own infinite stupidity he played him well after everyone else on the planet knew he was hurt(He did get fined for the NFL on that one), just to stick it to his owner. Mangini is a joke.
I will be at tonight's game and in my seat at kickoff. Those idiots already got their say with Randy Lerner.
STUCKINCRACKRON,
Yeah, Chad Pennington carried that team to 10 wins. Look at the roster. Would you take these players that Mangini drafted or signed?:
Gholston, Vernon
Keller, Dustin
Harris, David
Revis, Darrelle
Ferguson, D'Brickashaw
Mangold, Nick
Jenkins, Kris
Jones, Thomas
Woody, Damien
Faneca, Alan
Richardson, Tony
.......I would
Original Jason and the angler it amazes me how stupid you both sound. You root for a dysfunctional, garbage team that the only thing there is to talk about is how bad they are! Okay the steelers lost-big deal! There won't be any undefeated teams at seasons end-(indy and the saints are good but they will drop a game or two) Reality is that at 6-3 they are very much in the playoff picture of the afc, as they usually are!!! Lest we forget that the last good season from the bengals(2005) was the year we got our 5th super bowl!!The STEELERS are a proud and talented organization. They continue to be a contender despite lower draft positioning(due to WINNING) and playing in a small market. The browns have had more coaches in 10yrs than the steelers in 40. The cracks about the steelers being losers 5 DECADES ago mean about as much as the browns being winners that long ago. Most of todays generation doesn't care or remember it!! I am 42 and my son is 14. He has NEVER seen the browns win a playoff game(only been in 1 his whole lifetime) Yet the steelers made it to the bowl the year he was born(95,they lost but were still afc champs, browns have never been)and has seen them claim 2 championships in this decade and regulars in the playoffs and conference championship games!!! They lose players to free agency and retirement and reload with more talent. They don't make big splashes in free agency, rather they draft and develop talent. The browns pass on players like ohio born BIG BEN, but say what you want he has 2 lombardi's and will probably be in contention for several more before he hangs up his cleats!! The steelers haters wish that the browns organization mirrored the steelers".If they did you would have hope instead of disdain and jealousy of successful organization. So all you haters can make your emotion driven, non-factual rants. However reality and numbers speak for themselves.Under Bill Cowher they had the best record in his 15yrs.Mike Tis adding to that with # 6!!!
Thank goodness FOX 8 decided to air the Kosar interview. Just one more reason to turn to another team. Is he drunk or concussed? Blame teh injuries all you want, but most NFL retirees manage to do ok. Sorry to see the most recent "greatness" I can remember go to hell.
10 minutes to kickoff . . . woo!
Original Jason: "
I'm glad that all systems are go. Will Chad Johnson be sitting next to you in the Dawg Pound once you take your seat?"
CHILD PLEASE! Chad has too much class to sit anywhere near Randall! LOL
Hank/naples,
The whole Brown out thing is some strange attempt by Randall to get a job with the Browns. Interesting way to interview for a job...
Draft picks for next season??
http://wimp.com/footballfail/
seanh36...pittsburgh sucks and it took them 5 decades to win. Like I said earlier, your SB rings are in the past. No repeats from this team. Ha ha !!! Front runners.
The bengals wiped you up with that turrible towelette !! Did you see the defensive linemen for Cincy dancing on the sidelines??
You've been SWEPT sh*ttsburgh fans !! Ha ha !!
GO BENGALS !!!
seanh36..it amazes me how stupid you sound too. Btw, nice novel. Hey, did you see little ben flat on his back on that last play?? I think he set some sort of record on that pass too. Who is Cowher?? It's been years since he coached you guys. And I do know about a few of your former coaches because they either played/coached for the beloved Browns. Go Bengals !!!
Cincy owns you guys this year.
Angler-
Such anger. Remember, it is just a game.
You might want to try therapy.
NO! Just kidding!!! It is way too much fun reading your DESPERATE attempts at making yourself feel better.
I just worry that your tears might make a puddle in your keyboard.
