Browns, Dolphins make unusual trade

By Associated Press

CLEVELAND: The Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins have swapped salary cap experts.

On Monday, the Browns hired Matt Thomas as their vice president of football administration. He replaces Dawn Aponte, who accepted the position of senior vice president of football operations with Miami.

Thomas spent 12 seasons with the Dolphins, serving most recently as a vice president. In Miami, he worked under president Bryan Wiedmeier, who recently joined the Browns as their executive vice president of business operations.

Aponte spent one year with Cleveland and was the club's chief negotiator on contracts. She previously served on the NFL's management council and also worked for the New York Jets with Bill Parcells, her new boss in Miami.

She's the one that told Cribbs that their offer was "final". Now maybe they can get him a new contract.

Cribbs signed a contract and that is that. You did not see Omar Vizquel crying back in the 90's because he was underpaid. Unfortunately, he signed a long term contract and was making peanuts compared to other all stars. But he was a class act and dealt with it. he did not cry or threaten to hold out. Cribbs is great, but a deal is a deal.

I'm so tired of this "Cribbs signed a contract" stuff. The team can cut him at any time if he under performs. His only recourse is to sit out if he doesn't get paid. They were paying Dante Stallworth $5.5 million, and he was worthless. Same with Braylon. The club needs to do this not just for cribbs, but for the die-hard Browns fans, the best fans in the league, who have had little else to look foward to for 2 decades. PAY DA MAN!!!

First, Zipped86: Omar whined constantly. What are you talking about?

Second, Aponte got released because of the "Cribbs" situation. She messed up.

I agree she messed up with the "negotiations" by saying the offer was final and to take it or leave it.
You can't treat black people that way anymore.
I don't, however, believe we'll see the organization offer up some huge raise to a kick/punt return man. Especially with the threat of cap restrictions coming in the not-too-distant future, the Brown's may be more likely to trade Cribbs for a couple starters at some higher priority positions than throw a ton of money at him.
If he signs anything with the Browns, it will be a modest raise at best that's laden with incentives for performance.

Where in the wide, wide world of sports do see a racial issue in all of this? This can't be the first negotiations stalemate you've ever heard of! Guess you never lived through any of the "take it or leave it" URW contracts, huh?
