Two of top picks agree to contracts; Quinn talks might be moving along

BEREA: Two of the team's top three draft picks should be on the field when the Browns open training camp today.
Offensive tackle Joe Thomas and cornerback Eric Wright agreed to contracts Thursday night as the team and the players' agent, Peter Shaffer, worked to get both players in camp on time. The only thing that would keep them from signing today would be an unexpected snag in contract language.
That's good news for the Browns, who will only be missing quarterback Brady Quinn when the full team practices today at 3:30 p.m.
There were indications, though, that talks with Quinn had moved forward and his holdout might not last as long as initially thought.
Thomas agreed to a five-year deal, one less than usual, worth about $42.5 million, according to several reports.
He has been guaranteed somewhere in the neighborhood of $22 million or $23 million.
Camp starts in earnest today, which means the team's quarterback competition begins as well. Today also could be the day many of the questions about the status of center LeCharles Bentley are answered.
The team's first practice open to the public at the Berea facility begins at 3:30 p.m. Thirty minutes prior, General Manager Phil Savage will address the media and presumably update Bentley's condition and his training camp plans.
A year ago, Bentley tore the patellar tendon in his knee on the first day of camp.
A staph infection forced Cleveland Clinic doctors to open up his knee two more times to treat the staph with antibiotics.
Dr. Joseph Warren in New York then did a procedure to clean out the knee.
As recently as May, Bentley was expected to have another repair on the knee, but he postponed that decision in early June.
Shortly after, he said his recovery had progressed to the point that he would take part in camp.
The recovery seems nearly miraculous, but Bentley sounds confident and determined.
On Monday, Warren the New York Giants team physician told Bentley he was physically ready to play.
The Browns will ask him to take a team physical, and if he passes, the team and Bentley will figure out a plan for him during camp.
If he doesn't pass, things could get interesting.
Bentley has said he doesn't care what the Browns doctor says because he trusts Warren.
The Browns might ask Bentley to see a third doctor, which Savage had stated was the team's plan.
He said Bentley's situation is not ‘‘check the box and here we go.‘‘
Regardless, Bentley will start training camp on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List. That will give him time to reacclimate to football, though he supposedly is in amazing shape.
The team's quarterbacks have been working in a rookie camp for four days, but today marks the first day the entire team will be present.
Until Quinn signs, Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye will have an edge in learning the team's new offense. Once Quinn signs, the practice reps will be divided three ways until a starter is named.
Brownies
The Browns have adjusted their camp schedule in light of the cancellation of Family Fun Night Aug. 3. The Browns will have two practices that day in Berea, at 8:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The 2:30 p.m. practice scheduled for Aug. 8 has been canceled. The team will work at the stadium that night, and it will not be open to the public.
Family Fun Night was canceled due to damage cause by flooding and sewage backup at the Kenny Chesney concert July 14.
The team also advises that those attending camp should arrive early.
Fields have been reconfigured, so capacity is not as high as it had been. noweb
