Rookie quarterback makes bid to take over starting role, but probably not for opener

CHICAGO: If the father of the zone blitz wasn't lying in wait in the first game, rookie Brady Quinn might be the consensus choice as the Browns' starting quarterback.
Testing the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau might be something Browns coach Romeo Crennel would rather have Quinn experience Nov. 11, the second time the teams face.
Quinn, the first-round pick from Notre Dame, still gave folks something to talk about as the Browns concluded the preseason with a 19-9 victory over the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears on Thursday night at Soldier Field. The Browns (3-1) led 19-3 at halftime.
Playing the second and third quarters before giving way to Ken Dorsey, Quinn didn't provide as many thrills as he had in the previous two games and threw his first interception. Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo grabbed a tipped Quinn pass intended for receiver Travis Wilson with 9:39 left in the third quarter.
Quinn did add another touchdown drive and finished with four touchdowns in three preseason games, sitting out the first after an 11-day holdout cost him 16 practices. Charlie Frye, the presumed starter Sept. 9 when the Browns open the regular season against the Steelers, produced one touchdown in 11 preseason series. Derek Anderson went 0-for-13.
Quinn completed 9-of-14 for 64 yards and a quarterback rating of 44.9.
For the second time this preseason, Quinn turned a Browns' takeaway into a touchdown. He drove them 50 yards in nine plays, relying on running back Jerome Harrison and second-year receiver Wilson, who caught three passes for 19 yards in the march. Harrison carried five times for 23 yards and caught a pass for 8 yards. He scored on a 1-yard run, following a block by fullback Charles Ali.
Frye played two series and netted just one first down, completing 2-of-5 for 19 yards and a 51.2 rating. But he nearly hit Braylon Edwards on a long bomb for the second consecutive game. This time cornerback Nathan Vasher broke it up near the goal line.
Anderson also got two possessions and produced only a field goal, hitting on 6-of-9 for 53 yards and an 82.2 rating. On third and 6 from the Bears 7, his pass intended for Joshua Cribbs was deflected by linebacker Jamar Williams, one of three Bears in the vicinity.
Cribbs put aside any thought of using rookie Syndric Steptoe on punt returns by bringing back a punt 70 yards for a touchdown with 11:48 left in the second quarter.
Cribbs, the former Kent State quarterback, made one move after fielding the ball, then outran punter Brad Maynard down the right sideline to put the Browns ahead 12-0. Cribbs set franchise records for kickoff returns (61) and yards (1,494) last season, but Dennis Northcutt was the Browns' punt returner. Northcutt left for the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency.
''He did a great job, especially on the road and giving us field position and taking the punt for a touchdown,'' Crennel said of Cribbs at halftime. Cribbs helped keep the Bears in the shadow of their goal post in the first half with punt returns of 24, 8 and 9 yards before his touchdown.
The Browns found more than one unusual way to score, getting a safety with two seconds left in the first quarter when Jason Wright knocked the ball loose as Danieal Manning fielded a kickoff near the goal line, and it went out of bounds.
