Browns notebook: Fred Nance named to new role as organization's senior adviser, special counsel

By Nate Ulrich
Beacon Journal sports writer

The Browns announced Monday that Fred Nance will fill a new role for the organization as its senior adviser and special counsel.

Nance served as general counsel for the Browns since December 2009 while remaining a partner at the Squire Sanders law firm, where he has practiced for 35 years. The Browns hired Sashi Brown earlier this month to serve as their new general counsel.

Nance will now work with Browns CEO Joe Banner, President Alec Scheiner and Brown on strategic and development matters.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Fred’s knowledge and expertise continue to serve our organization,” Banner said in a statement. “Fred’s track record as a top sports attorney is reflected in his having been a finalist for the position of NFL Commissioner in 2006. As a Cleveland native, Fred’s keen awareness of the local landscape has been invaluable for the franchise over the last several years, and we are thrilled that his passion for Cleveland and the Browns will continue to benefit our club.”

Job hunt

Bill Davis, who spent the past two seasons coaching linebackers for the Browns, interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator position on Sunday, ESPN reported. Davis also interviewed with the New York Jets on Monday for their linebackers coach opening, the New York Post reported.

Coming up

New Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton is scheduled to hold his introductory news conference at 10 a.m. today at the team’s headquarters in Berea. The Browns hired Horton Jan. 18. They officially fired former defensive coordinator Dick Jauron on Monday, ESPN reported. Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is also scheduled to address the media today.
