The Browns basically told retired NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia thanks, but no thanks when he called them to let them know he’s open to a comeback.
But the fact that Garcia, 43, felt compelled to contact the Browns indicates how tenuous the quarterback position is for the organization. Coach Rob Chudzinski is expected to announce this morning whether he’ll give Brandon Weeden another shot as the starter or if he’ll resort to backup Jason Campbell on Sunday when the Browns (3-4) visit the Kansas City Chiefs (7-0).
“It’s funny, I actually reached out to the Browns and said, ‘Hey, if you need a guy to come in, hey, work me out, take a look,’ ” Garcia told 92.3 The Fan during a radio interview Tuesday. “I don’t know if people want me back in Cleveland, but I’m open to the opportunity.”
When Garcia reached out to the Browns, they told him that they planned to roll with Weeden and Campbell in the aftermath of Brian Hoyer suffering a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Oct. 3.
Garcia hasn’t attempted a pass in the NFL since 2008 and he hasn’t been on a roster since he was with the Houston Texans in 2011. He went 3-7 as a starter in 2004, when he played for the Browns.
Garcia serves an analyst for NFL Network and a quarterbacks coach for his company, Jeff Garcia Football.
The Browns signed wide receiver Brian Tyms off the practice squad of the Miami Dolphins and waived wide receiver Tori Gurley, the team announced Tuesday.
The 6-foot-3, 204-pound Tyms entered the NFL when he signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie from Florida A&M University on May 4, 2012. Tyms spent all of last season and the first seven weeks this season on the Dolphins’ practice squad.
He had 45 receptions for 661 yards and four touchdowns during two seasons at Florida A&M. He also spent two years at Tallahassee Community College.
The Browns promoted Gurley from their practice squad to the active roster Friday. It was the second time that happened this season.
The Browns re-signed cornerback Julian Posey to their practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. They promoted him to the active roster Friday and waived him Monday.
