Position battles: The rotating of rookie Mitchell Schwartz and Oniel Cousins at right tackle with the first-team offense has seemingly ended. Schwartz worked with the first unit for the third consecutive practice, a sign he’s on pace to meet the coaching staff’s expectations by becoming an immediate starter.
Who stood out: Undrafted rookie defensive back Tashaun Gipson intercepted a pass from quarterback Thaddeus Lewis during an 11-on-11 drill and later broke up a pass from rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden to wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi in a session of seven-on-seven.
Highs and lows: Tight end Alex Smith dropped a sharp pass from Weeden on a slant route and punished himself by doing pushups. … Cornerback Dimitri Patterson intercepted an ill-timed pass from quarterback Seneca Wallace during an 11-on-11 drill. … Middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson had what coach Pat Shurmur deemed a safety when he reached running back Montario Hardesty in the end zone during an 11-on-11 drill. … Tight end Jordan Cameron pancaked defensive end Marcus Benard during a running play. … Rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon made a nice adjustment to catch a pass from Weeden that was tipped by linebacker Chris Gocong. … The defense prevailed in two one-minute drills. The first unit completed its stand when Jackson stopped Hardesty at the 2-yard line and Gocong knocked him out of bounds at the 1 as time expired. The second unit triumphed when cornerback Buster Skrine had tight coverage on rookie wide receiver Travis Benjamin as he failed to haul in a pass from quarterback Colt McCoy in the end zone.
Sidelined: Free safety Usama Young (undisclosed), defensive lineman Brian Schaefering (undisclosed), defensive end Frostee Rucker (undisclosed), defensive tackle Phil Taylor (pectoral muscle), fullback Eddie Williams (undisclosed) and wide receiver Carlton Mitchell (leg).
Today’s schedule: Practice is open to the public from 8:45-11:15 a.m.
