Position battles: Could the Browns’ two fullbacks — Owen Marecic and rookie Brad Smelley — both make the team? “Possibly,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “Possibly, ’cause Smelley could be considered a tight end as well as a fullback.”
Who stood out: Cornerback Buster Skrine. In an 11-on-11 session, he tipped a pass from quarterback Colt McCoy and intercepted it. He later broke up two more passes from McCoy, helping shut out the second-team offense during a two-minute drill.
Highs and lows: Undrafted rookie offensive tackle Jeff Shugarts and defensive end Auston English got into a scuffle after a play. … In an 11-on-11 drill, undrafted rookie free safety Tashaun Gipson broke up a pass from quarterback Thaddeus Lewis and nearly intercepted it, and undrafted rookie strong safety Emanuel Davis broke up a long pass from McCoy to rookie wide receiver Travis Benjamin. … In seven-on-seven action, Davis broke up another pass from McCoy, and cornerback Joe Haden broke up one against quarterback Seneca Wallace. … In the two-minute drill, the first-team offense’s attempt to score a touchdown was foiled when strong safety T.J. Ward nearly intercepted a fourth-down pass from rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden in the end zone. The second-team offense’s drive ended when strong safety David Sims broke up a pass from McCoy to tight end Evan Moore in the end zone.
Sidelined: Rookie defensive tackle John Hughes (undisclosed), cornerback Dimitri Patterson (right ankle), strong safety Usama Young (reported hamstring), rookie running back Trent Richardson (had arthroscopic surgery on left knee Aug. 9), strong safety Ray Ventrone (right hamstring), weakside linebacker Chris Gocong (had surgery Aug. 10 to repair torn right Achilles tendon and is out for the season), rookie linebacker Emmanuel Acho (undisclosed), defensive tackle Scott Paxson (right knee), offensive lineman Oniel Cousins (Shurmur cited soreness), defensive end Juqua Parker (undisclosed), defensive tackle Phil Taylor (had surgery to repair torn pectoral muscle May 16 and is out at least until late October) and strongside linebacker Scott Fujita (left leg).
