Position battles: Browns defensive tackle John Hughes, a third-round pick in this year’s draft, returned to practice after sitting out the previous day with an undisclosed injury, but he did not participate in team drills. Fellow rookie Billy Winn filled Hughes’ spot with the first-team defense.
Who stood out: Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown. He matched wide receiver Owen Spencer stride for stride on a deep route and broke up a pass from quarterback Seneca Wallace in a seven-on-seven drill.
Highs and lows: In addition to Hughes, defensive end Juqua Parker returned to practice. Parker missed three practices with an undisclosed injury before returning to action. He participated in team drills. … Tight end Benjamin Watson practiced but did not participate in team drills. … Rookie running back Trent Richardson continued to sit out, but he signed a couple of autographs after practice. Richardson had a sleeve on his left knee, which he had surgically repaired Aug. 9. … Tight end Jordan Cameron caught a sharp pass from Wallace over the middle during an 11-on-11 session. Rookie wide receiver Josh Gordon and undrafted rookie cornerback Johnson Bademosi bobbled a deep pass from Wallace before it fell incomplete. … In seven-on-seven action, Gordon ran a slant route and grabbed a bullet of a pass from rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden. Cornerbacks Buster Skrine and Trevin Wade broke up passes from quarterback Colt McCoy.
Sidelined: Defensive end Emmanuel Stephens (left leg), running back Chris Ogbonnaya (ankle), cornerback Antwuan Reed (left leg), cornerback Dimitri Patterson (right ankle), strong safety Usama Young (reported hamstring), strong safety Ray Ventrone (right hamstring), weakside linebacker Chris Gocong (had surgery Aug. 10 to repair torn right Achilles tendon and is out for the season), rookie linebacker Emmanuel Acho (undisclosed), defensive tackle Scott Paxson (right knee), offensive lineman Oniel Cousins (Shurmur cited soreness), defensive tackle Phil Taylor (had surgery to repair torn pectoral muscle May 16 and is out at least until late October), strongside linebacker Scott Fujita (left leg) and Richardson (left knee).
