America Today - Civility Series

Highs and lows for the Browns under coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert

Coach Pat Shurmur’s best:

■ 2-1 in his first 3 games.

■ 3-game win streak this season.

■ Developed the 2011 draft class, with three starting all 16 games.

■ Defense improved significantly in 2011.

Shurmur’s worst

■ Lost 11 of the final 13 games in 2011 to finish 4-12.

■ Did not defeat a division rival in 2011.

■ Ended the 2011 season with six consecutive losses.

■ Started the 2012 season with five consecutive losses.

■ Lost eight games in a row to division foes.

■ Lost 12 consecutive road games spanning the two seasons.

■ 2011 offense ranked 30th in points and 29th in yards per game.

■ Did not hire an offensive coordinator his first season.

General Manager

Tom Heckert’s best:

■ Remade a roster that was one of the league’s oldest into the league’s youngest.

■ Draft picks included starters cornerback Joe Haden, defensive tackle Phil Taylor, running back Trent Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden, strong safety T.J. Ward and wide receiver Greg Little.

■  Richardson broke Jim Brown’s team rookie records for rushing yards (950) and rushing touchdowns (11).

■  Weeden set the Browns’ rookie record for passing yards (3,385).

Heckert’s worst:

■  None of his 28 draft picks in three years made the Pro Bowl.

■ Weeden threw more interceptions (17) than touchdowns (14) as a rookie.

■ Failed to trade with the St. Louis Rams to acquire quarterback Robert Griffin III.

■ Traded to the Atlanta Falcons the draft rights that could have been used to select wide receiver Julio Jones sixth overall in 2011.

■ Fourth-round 2011 draft pick fullback Owen Marecic has contributed little.
