Thumbs up/thumbs down after Browns’ 24-10 loss to Steelers

By Nate Ulrich

Beacon Journal sports writer

Steelers 24, Browns 10

Offense: The Browns lost three fumbles and third-string quarterback Thaddeus Lewis threw an interception. The Steelers scored two touchdowns off two of the fumbles. The Browns converted only 3-of-10 third downs. Thumbs down.

Defense: The Browns didn’t tally any takeaways and their young, depleted secondary gave up three touchdown passes. Defensive end Jabaal Sheard provided a bright spot, recording the Browns’ only two sacks. Thumbs down.

Special teams: Ray Ventrone’s 35-yard run on a fake punt early in the third quarter led to the Browns’ lone touchdown. Phil Dawson missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt wide right in the second quarter, but he rebounded by making a 51-yard attempt with 3:48 left before halftime, tying a record for the second-longest successful field goal at Heinz Field. Thumbs up.

Coaching: The direct snap to Ventrone was a great call, and the Browns were prepared to fight, as evidenced by their chippy play. But nine penalties for 79 yards and four turnovers contributed to a disappointing end to a 5-11 season. Thumbs down.
