Cavaliers' camp to open with thud

Pavlovic, Varejao still unsigned, Snow injured

By Brian Windhorst Beacon Journal sportswriter

Today should have been a good day.

It's the Cavaliers' first official day in their new training facility in Independence as they bask in the glow of the greatest season in team history while enjoying the optimism of the start of the new season.

The opening of training camp at Cleveland Clinic Courts, however, probably will be overshadowed by unconventional and uncertain contract disputes and a late injury at the team's most fragile position.

Signs point to Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao being no shows, and point guard Eric Snow has a knee injury that might cause him to miss all of the preseason.

The Cavs were unable to come to terms with Pavlovic and Varejao, both restricted free agents, by Sunday night. Their one-year qualifying offers expired at midnight.

Technically, neither are holding out, because they are not under contract. It does, however, represent a stalemate rarely seen in the NBA. Restricted free agents who can't come to terms on long-term deals usually sign qualifying offers as their last resort. Varejao, whose qualifying offer was $1.2 million, and Pavlovic, whose offer was $2.8 million, and the Cavs are effectively in uncharted waters.

The Cavs maintain both players' rights, but without the fallback qualifying offers in place, the sides are in a limbo not seen since the current contract structure was established in 1997.

Meanwhile, Snow might have surgery early this week to repair a torn meniscus, his agent, Steve Kauffman, said Sunday.

Normally, such injuries take about four to six weeks to heal after successful arthroscopic surgery. Snow injured the knee last week while working out in Atlanta, Kauffman said.

Devin Brown, who signed with the Cavs on Saturday, can play point guard and might fill Snow's role for the time being.
