James might be out for rest of week due to sprained left finger

CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers keep saying they are thinking ''day-to-day'' about LeBron James, but in reality, it is more month-to-month.
It isn't the sprain to James' left index finger that the Cavs are worried about, it's the potential of a resprain — which is why he sat out his third consecutive game Tuesday. According to team sources, he's very likely to sit out tonight's game at the Washington Wizards, and he might even sit out the rest of the week.
The Cavs are wary about James' finger becoming an issue for the rest of the season, because his fingers and hands take such a beating during the course of a normal game. Opposing teams will certainly be aware of it and might even target James' hand, especially as they slap at the ball as he drives to the basket often.
''I'm pretty sure that LeBron will be able to play with it but at the same time, I'm pretty sure that it's going to be a target,'' Washington Wizards All-Star Caron Butler told the Washington Post.
Butler played with a finger sprain two seasons ago.
''He'll probably be able to put some tape around it and take some precautions but guys will be hitting it so he has to be careful and make sure it's pretty much healed so he can handle a hit because during the course of a game, it's going to get hit.''
In the locker room
Cavs coach Mike Brown does not consult the front office on his lineups. That is a fact clearly stated by General Manager Danny Ferry. But putting seldom-used guard Shannon Brown into the starting lineup for James on Tuesday hinted that there was something extra going on.
With the need to clear a roster spot for Anderson Varejao, the Cavs need to drop a player in the next few days. The only player without a guaranteed contract is rookie Demetris Nichols, but the Cavs would prefer to hold on to him.
Since not picking up the option in his contract for next season last month, the Cavs have been involved in talks about trading Shannon Brown. With the pressing need for a roster spot and the Cavs' willingness to perhaps take a second-round draft pick for him, moving Brown into the starting lineup has the convenient side benefit of showcasing him to other teams. He had not been in the Cavs' rotation since the preseason.
