Cavaliers game day
Assistant coach has heart surgery

Hank Egan, 70, known for friendly approach, will be off indefinitely

By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers will be without their most experienced coach — and Mike Brown without ''his blankie'' — for a while.

Veteran assistant coach Hank Egan had triple bypass heart surgery Saturday at Fairview Hospital. The operation was a success and Egan is expected to make a full recovery, but he'll be away from the team for a while as he heals.

Egan, 70, was exercising recently and didn't feel well afterward. He consulted Cavs athletic trainer Max Benton, who got Egan some tests that revealed he would need the procedure. With 40 years of experience, Egan is one of the sages in the NBA and Cavs head coach Mike Brown's closest adviser. Earlier this season, Egan got several votes in the NBA's general manager's survey for being the league's best assistant coach.

Brown played for Egan at the University of San Diego and coached with him when both were assistants with the San Antonio Spurs. When Brown got the Cavs' job in 2005, his first order of business was to talk Egan out of retirement.

''He's a people guy. You can't do anything but respect him because he comes right at you,'' Brown said. ''You know how little kids have blankies? He's my blankie.''

Egan, who has also been the head coach at the Air Force Academy and an assistant with the Golden State Warriors, is well liked by the Cavs' players for his grandfather-like role on the team. To send a positive message to Egan, the Cavs left the chair on the bench next to Brown empty for Sunday's game.

''He's been around this game for so long, he's seen the ins and outs of everything that goes on in this league,'' LeBron James said. ''We've all had our prayers out for him.''

Around the court

• James spent a lot of time in the offseason working on his jump shooting and hit an eye-opening 62 percent from 3-point range during the Olympic qualifying tournament in August. But the results have not yet carried over. James is shooting just 31 percent on 3-pointers this season, down from last year and the worst since his rookie season. On jump shots, James is shooting just under 40 percent, almost the same percentage as last year.

• James is headed for another magazine cover. This fall, he's been on the cover of Fortune, Black Enterprise and Men's Health. He had a photo shoot for Slam magazine Saturday and did so in a combination of business clothes and his uniform as he furthers his goal to promote himself as a businessman just as much as a basketball player.

• Forward Cedric Simmons is still listed on the Cavs' injury report as being out with a sprained ankle, but he has been cleared for all contact and has been practicing with the team with no limitations. At this point, Brown said, Simmons is staying on the inactive list because there's no room for him in the rotation and not because of the ankle anymore.
