LOS ANGELES: The way Anderson Varejao throws his body around, injuries are always a risk. But this one came as plain bad luck.
Varejao suffered a left ankle sprain in the third quarter of the Cavaliers' 98-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday when he accidentally stepped on Lakers' guard Sasha Vujacic's foot.
X-rays were negative for a break, but it might be nearly as bad. Doctors at Staples Center diagnosed Varejao with a grade-2 sprain, which is a partial tearing of a ligament. He is to see Lakers' team doctor Steve Lombardo today and will have an MRI to confirm the diagnosis.
It is a low-ankle sprain, not a high-ankle sprain like Varejao suffered his rookie season, costing him 17 games. The Cavs will know more today, but it appears he could be out for several weeks.
''We know he's going to be out a few games,'' LeBron James said. ''We're going to need a few guys to step up.''
Last week the Cavs lost starting guard Sasha Pavlovic for six to eight weeks with a left mid-foot sprain.
Varejao is a valuable reserve big man and the Cavs are 14-9 with him in the lineup this season.
With him out, it is likely that Donyell Marshall, who just returned to the active roster after 21/2 months with wrist and finger injuries, will be pressed into service. Big man Cedric Simmons might also be activated with Varejao headed to the sidelines.

• You've heard of point guards who can play shooting guard, shooting guards who can play small forward, and power forwards who can play center. But have you ever heard of a combination shooting guard/power forward? That is the role Ira Newble had to play Sunday. He has started the last two games in place of Pavlovic at guard, and when Varejao was lost and Zydrunas Ilgauskas fouled out, the Cavs were thin with their big men.
Cavs coach Mike Brown and his assistants met near the bench for 30 seconds to discuss the situation when Ilgauskas fouled out with six minutes to play in the game.
''I didn't know who they were going to point to,'' Newble said. ''I just went out and played hard and that's how you deal with it.''
Newble had two rebounds and a key dunk in the fourth to help the comeback.
• Over the weekend James went from fifth to third on the Cavs all-time scoring list. Friday he passed Bingo Smith to move into fourth, and Sunday he passed Mark Price to move into third. James now has 9,577 points in 354 games, 27.1 points per game. He is on pace to pass both Austin Carr and all-time leader Brad Daugherty this season. Daugherty, who has 10,389 points, played in 548 games with the Cavs.
• James wore a bandage on his left knee Sunday to protect a floor burn suffered Friday against the Phoenix Suns.
