Cavaliers game day
Hughes enjoys fun more than victory

Now playing for Bulls, he says Cavs required him to sacrifice his style

By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND: When Larry Hughes was with the Cavaliers, he repeatedly said what he most cared about was getting the team wins. Apparently those words came with crossed fingers and gritted teeth.

Now that he is a member of the Chicago Bulls, Hughes is changing his tune and, he says, finally speaking his mind. Back at Quicken Loans Arena for a game Sunday, Hughes made it clear that being in Cleveland and winning wasn't fulfilling to him. He would rather have fun.

''I play to enjoy myself. Some people take this the wrong way, but winning a championship is not what I base everything on,'' Hughes said. ''I was given an opportunity to play basketball, travel around and have fun doing it and that's what I want to do. I wouldn't take being unhappy and not being myself and winning.

''I would rather enjoy myself with 18,000-20,000 people watching the game and the people sending fan mail and those things and be happy.''

With the Cavs, Hughes often did make sacrifices from the way he preferred to play and often commented to the media about it. But when he played point guard, a position he disliked, the Cavs were most successful. He tolerated it as the Cavs won, but is glad those days are over.

''I didn't come here to play the point guard, that's just it,'' Hughes said. ''I came here to run the wing, just like he (LeBron James) was running the other wing. I was asked to sacrifice for the team to win and for everybody, I guess, to get paid. That is what was told to me and I wasn't happy with that.''

• The Cavs simply can't get healthy. The team announced Sunday that Zydrunas Ilgauskas will be shut down for a minimum of a week with a back strain that has been bothering him. He'll be re-evaluated after next weekend and there's no certainly he'll be able to return then.

''More than anything else, it is a precautionary measure,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said. ''He's had some wear and tear over the the season and his back needs a rest.''

Ilgauskas has had back issues for years and has had trouble with spasms in the past. This represents the first time that they've knocked him out for multiple games.

• Wally Szczerbiak was a surprise addition to the roster after his addition to the family. Szczerbiak took a 6:30 a.m. flight out of New York to make it to Sunday's game, a day after his wife gave birth to their third child, Max. The baby is in the neonatal unit and Szczerbiak wasn't planning on coming to the game, but his wife, Shannon, encouraged him.

''She was doing great and I have to thank her and the doctors for making it so smooth,'' Szczerbiak said. ''I saw Max was doing well and he was doing a lot better today.''

Szczerbiak, who had 17 points in the win over the Bulls, flew back to New York after the game. He is expected to miss practice again today and might just meet the team in the Big Apple when the Cavs play the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

• Kaniel Dickens and Billy Thomas' 10-day contracts expired Sunday. The Cavs are expected to sign both to second 10-day deals today.
