Back feeling better, Ilgauskas returns

Coach Brown says he doesn't plan to limit playing time for center

By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND: Zydrunas Ilgauskas returned to the Cavaliers lineup Sunday, in theory, as good as new.

Even though an inflamed disc kept getting worse, to the point where he and team doctors decided to shut him down two weeks ago, there are no plans to reduce his playing time now that he is back.

Cavs coach Mike Brown said the team's medical staff has not suggested any minute restrictions after clearing Ilgauskas to return to the court.

''Our training staff says he is a go and he says he's a go, and I'm going to try to play him as normally as I can,'' Brown said. ''I'm going to do it unless I'm told otherwise.''

Ilgauskas' back pain had been worsening before he took the time off. It was more of a group decision to deal with the injury now, when there is time before the postseason.

''More than anything, you just have to take care of your yourself, do stretching and exercises,'' Ilgauskas said. ''Hopefully I can avoid big hits or falling down.''

Say what?

• LeBron James was asked for his response to Washington Wizards guard DeShawn Stevenson's calling him ''overrated'' following Thursday's loss. James dismissed the comment, and then Stevenson himself, in a hip-hop context.

''With DeShawn Stevenson, it is kind of funny,'' James said. ''It's almost like Jay-Z saying something bad about Soulja Boy. There's no comparison. Enough said.''

If you don't know who the artest Soulja Boy is, then you get the point.

In the locker room

• Damon Jones followed though with his promise and shaved off his mohawk during the weekend.

''Every city in the East (conference) had seen it,'' Jones said, ''It's time for me to set a new trend.''

• Since March 5, the Cavs ranked third in 3-pointers made per game, at just over 10. Much of it had to do with missing Ilgauskas, their primary interior scorer. The Cavs attempted an average of 25 3-pointers a game while Ilgauskas was sidelined. They average 19 3-pointers per game for the season.

• Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is involved in a lot of businesses but he might be interested in a new one. For the third time this month, Gilbert sat in on the FSN-Ohio telecast during the second quarter. Earlier this season, he was a guest host on a Cavs preseason radio game.
