NCAA star Stephen Curry returns favor

After LeBron watches him play, he attends Cavs' Charlotte game

By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CHARLOTTE: This is what happens when you play like royalty on the basketball court: You get an audience with the king.

NCAA Tournament sensation Stephen Curry, who was born in Akron when his father, Dell, played for the Cavaliers, met with LeBron James prior to Wednesday night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats. James attended the Davidson Wildcats' victory against Wisconsin in the tournament last week.

''It was kind of a shock to see him in Detroit. I never expected to see him there, but with the timing of him having a game in Charlotte right after the tournament, I could come down and watch him,'' Curry said. ''The NBA is pretty demanding, and for him to come and sit in our section and be kind of animated when we made some plays, it was pretty cool.''

Curry broke out at the tournament, averaging 32 points per game. He opened the eyes of many inside the NBA, including James — despite the slight build on his 6-foot-3 frame. The Cavaliers happened to be playing the Detroit Pistons the night after Davidson's game.

''I wanted to see the kid play. I was watching him on TV and I wanted to see him live, and he was very impressive,'' James said. ''He's a good basketball player.''

James said that Curry's build shouldn't be a hindrance.

''(It) doesn't matter,'' James said. ''If you can play the game of basketball, you can play.''

Curry already has said he plans to return to Davidson, which is near Charlotte, but he expects to play the point-guard position. As far as what he and his teammates accomplished, he's still adjusting.

''I'm not going to the gym every day for practice, which is kind of weird,'' he said. ''But it has kind of sunk in what we've done and we're just trying to get back into the normal flow of life and college.''
