Soon to be free agent, he's hoping to receive longer deal with Cavs

WASHINGTON: Devin Brown was a last-minute addition to the Cavaliers' roster this season, signing a one-year contract the weekend before training camp began in September.
He turned out to be more than an afterthought on the roster, piecing together a solid season playing a number of different roles and positions. He played through a broken finger and sore knees and never complained as he bounced in and out of the starting lineup and rotation as the season ebbed and flowed. He averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in 23 minutes a game during the regular season.
Now, he said he'd like to do it all over again. A free agent at the end of the season, Brown said he wants to re-sign with the Cavs and said the vibe he's gotten from the organization is that it is mutual.
''I definitely would like to come back and I am under the impression that I will be,'' Brown said. ''So I am hoping things will work out.''
Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry has another challenging summer ahead. Both Daniel Gibson and Delonte West are restricted free agents, and talks with restricted players have dragged on for months in the past. Last summer, infamously, they dragged into the season with Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao.
Until those players' futures are settled, Brown might not know if he'll be back. But after playing the past several years on one-year contracts this year, he made a base salary of $1.2 million, but has hit some incentives he'd like a little long-term stability from the team.
''I'd like to think I've done enough to get a multi-year deal and that's what I'd be looking for,'' Brown said. ''You never know what will happen. I'm not going to worry about other players or other teams right now; things have a way of working themselves out.''
In the locker room
• NBA Commissioner David Stern met with the media before the game Thursday and backed up his office's decision not to suspend Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood for his hit on LeBron James. Stern said he did not get involved, however.
• James faced some rude reactions at the Verizon Center in Game 3, but it was nothing out of the ordinary for him. As he's shown many times in the past when he's engaged in back-and-forths with courtside fans on the road, James isn't bothered by it.
''When opposing fans know you can do something very well they tend to vibe with you,'' James said. ''They say things they wouldn't say to a guy who they're not threatened by.''
• Wally Szczerbiak is an avid golfer and a good one at that, sporting a 6 handicap. This summer, though, he's up for an ultimate test. He's accepted an invitation to play in the American Century Celebrity Championship from July 9-12 in Reno, Nev., which will be on national television. It will be first time playing in the event for Szczerbiak, who started to become a serious golfer while at Miami University.
''I'm hoping not to have a lot of time to practice,'' he said. ''I want to be playing basketball until late June.''
• Cavs guard Eric Snow and Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld celebrated their birthdays Thursday.
