BOSTON: As if all the other elements confronting them in intimidating TD Banknorth Garden weren't enough, the Cavaliers prepared for another enemy Wednesday in Game 5: the Boston pollen.
Boston is known as being an allergy capital this time of year, and it has certainly seized on several Cavs players who are susceptible. Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West all have battled various symptoms while on the road in this series, and it prompted the team to take some steps to battle the issue.
''I'm not going outside at all. Our hotel is near the Boston Common so I'm just going from the hotel to the bus,'' Szczerbiak said. ''You want to avoid taking medication if you can because it can make you drowsy, so I'm just trying to avoid the pollen.''
As he did in Cleveland, Ben Wallace stayed in the locker room during the pregame introductions, when fireworks caused smoke, which Wallace said contributed to the allergy attack that forced him out of Game 2 in Boston.
West, whose voice was affected during Wednesday's shootaround, said he has dealt with the allergies all his life and will just battle through it.
''It's always bad in the spring here,'' said West, who played three years with the Celtics. ''It's something you deal with. You can't let it affect your game.''
In the locker room
• Daniel Gibson has a bruised left shoulder after taking a charge from Ray Allen in the third quarter Wednesday. He is listed as day to day.
• With this start Wednesday, Zydrunas Ilgauskas became the Cavs' all-time leader in postseason games played with 48. He passed Mark Price for the honor. Ilgauskas has played in nine series with the Cavs, but had to go eight years between appearances at one point.
''It just means I'm old,'' Ilgauskas said,
• Before Game 5, Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge was given the award as Sporting News Executive of the Year. The Los Angeles Lakers' Mitch Kupchak finished second. Ainge traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen last summer.
• The Cavs announced that FSN-Ohio will broadcast Game 6 on Friday in high definition. The coverage starts at 7:30 p.m.
