Travel presents challenge for Cavs

Team hoping to extend seven-game win streak

By George M. Thomas

INDEPENDENCE: It is called sweet home cookin', but now the Cavaliers will try to see whether they can take their recipe for success on the road for a two-game trip to New Jersey and Detroit.

The Cavs, who are riding a seven-game winning streak, play the Nets tonight at the Izod Center in East Rutherford.

Five of the seven wins have come at Quicken Loans Arena. In four of those games, the Cavaliers have scored more than 100 points.

So the plan is to not change anything except the uniform to the road variety.

''That's one thing I told the guys. We played well; we've got a good winning streak going; we have to continue the success we have. . . . We've been home for a little bit,'' LeBron James said. ''We've got to take that same energy we've had for the past three or four games at home and try to bring that to an environment that sometimes can be very difficult.''

The key: Being their own fans, James said.

Guard Daniel Gibson said that shouldn't be a problem because the team is closer than in past years. Still, coach Mike Brown doesn't want his team getting ahead of itself when it comes to its recent success.

''For me, it's not about carrying momentum. It's about going and attacking this next game,'' he said. ''If you can really get into your mind that each game is its own entity or separate deal, then it becomes
easy.

''That's what we preach. We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Because when you start thinking . . . now, it feels enormous. It feels like a burden you have.''

James isn't really concerned about the winning streak.

''It's good, but we have bigger plans now. We have bigger challenges and bigger goals, and it's more than a six- or seven-game winning streak,'' he said. ''As long as we're getting better every game, that's what I care about in the long run.''

Wallace's resolve

Cavs forward Ben Wallace was the first to concede that if his ailing left knee wasn't healthy Saturday, he wouldn't force the issue. But against the Utah Jazz, he proved to be a force, grabbing 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

''Once you get out there, the adrenaline takes over and it's amazing how your body feels,'' he said. ''I just went out there and played hard and tried to make it tough on guys as far as coming into the paint.

''Our defense did a great job. Anytime we've got our defense clicking like that and the way our offense has been going, good things will happen for us.''

Back in it

Gibson said his back feels much better after he landed hard on it when he was fouled Saturday.

''It was pretty sore yesterday. It's a good thing we had a day off. I had time to lay around and let it heal on its own,'' he said. ''I'm good now. There's soreness, [but] as far as affecting my play, it didn't stay at all.''

NBA crowns king

James received the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award Monday for the second consecutive week. It was the 15th time he received the honor.

He averaged 33.7 points on 60 percent shooting with eight assists and six rebounds in 41 minutes per game. The highlight of the week came with another 41-point performance.

The 'Eyes have it

If there were any doubt that Brown was an Ohio State fan, it was erased Monday when the Cavs coach greeted the media in a scarlet-and-gray ensemble complete with sleeveless sweater vest. ''It would be in honor of the Ohio State University, yes,'' he said when asked about it. OSU will play rival Michigan on Saturday.

Don't expect him to wear it the entire week, however.

''That would be difficult because I already packed my stuff [for the road trip],'' he said.

James was wearing an OSU basketball T-shirt. When asked about Michigan week, he blew it off with a simple: ''They stink.''
