Free-agent questions wearing on LeBron

Decision is two years away, yet topic remains hot in major NBA cities

By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

AUBURN HILLS, MICH.: LeBron James can't escape the questions regarding his free-agent status in 2010.

It was the topic du jour in the basketball world and on the Internet after he received a grilling at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., where the Cavaliers played the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night.

It's a question that he appears to be growing increasingly weary of answering and it cropped up again as the Cavs prepared to take on the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

''No, sometimes people don't have nothing to write about,'' he said when asked if he was surprised about the level of interest. ''They need a story once again and keep bringing up my free agency.''

When asked if he might be willing to keep the Pistons in mind when the time comes, he replied: ''I'm happy where I'm at right now. We'll see what happens in two years.''

Ben's homecoming

Even after watching Chauncey Billups show up in Cleveland in a Denver Nuggets uniform, some members of the Cavaliers still can't get over the fact that they won't be facing him in a Pistons uniform.

''It's going to be weird going out there and not seeing him be the point guard for this team,'' James said. ''It is weird. It should be weird to everyone that's been around Detroit and been around sports.''

The Pistons traded Billups to the Nuggets for guard Allen Iverson a couple of weeks ago. For Ben Wallace, who played with Billups, the effect is more jarring because a number of his former teammates are gone.

''It's just strange coming in here and this guy is no longer here and that guy is no longer here and a couple more guys are no longer here,'' he said.

Wallace played for the Pistons between 2000-06.

''That's a little strange because we played together for a number of years and we built that friendship, that bond,'' he said.

Still, Wallace knows better than to look for anything other than mutual respect from remaining teammates and fans.

''Coming back here, I look forward to going out and competing against those guys because I know what they're going to bring to the table and they know what to expect from me,'' he said. ''It makes for an exciting basketball game.''

Waiting for 'Dyess?

Rumors persist that former Pistons forward Antonio McDyess, who was traded to the Nuggets along with Billups, but eventually waived, could end up in a Cavs uniform.

Wallace was asked if he could exert any influence over his former teammate.

''I haven't thought about it, but I'm sure 'Dyess is going to have to cross that bridge when he comes to it. No, I haven't talked to him. Well, he hasn't answered my call,'' Wallace said laughing.

Quick shots

Wally Szczerbiak was excused from the team for personal reasons. Coach Mike Brown said that he didn't know how long he'd be gone. The Cavs activated rookie forward Darnell Jackson to fill the spot.

I think it's greed.

If he moves, maybe AGMC could buy it. It looks exactly like their wellness center on Rte 18.
