Maryland grand jury indicts Cavs' West on weapons' charges

By George M. Thomas

Beacon Journal sports writer

CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers will continue to allow the legal process to unfold before saying anything regarding guard Delonte West.

A Prince George's County, Md., grand jury Tuesday indicted West on two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of carrying a firearm, two counts of transporting a firearm, and one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving. All of the charges are misdemeanors. Each weapons count carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.

''It is our understanding that today's developments are part of the legal process that continues to take place with Delonte and he and his legal council will handle that,'' Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said. ''We will continue to take this matter very seriously and monitor and respect the legal process as it proceeds, but not speculate or comment about it.''

West returned to the Cavs Saturday night, scoring 13 points. Despite the indictment, West remains on the team's active roster.

''You don't want anyone to have any type of setback whether it's this or anything else. He's a good guy,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said. ''We hope everything comes out perfect for him, but it's part of life, part of the process. We're just going to take it one day at a time.''

West was arrested Sept. 17 for speeding on a motorcycle and carrying multiple weapons on the Capital Beltway in Prince George's County, Md.

Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey said West will likely be arraigned by the end of the week, and the case could go to trial early next year.

Plaxico Burress shot himself with an unregistered gun and was sentenced to 2 years, of which he is now serving. Let's see how this plays out.

I for one hope that Delonte gets through this and maybe even gets the help he NEEDS to with his Bi Polar disorder, he is a great athlete but that can all be overshadowed and go away quickly with nonsense such as this.

"He's a good guy,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said."

"two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of carrying a firearm, two counts of transporting a firearm, and one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving."

Sound like a real swell guy to me too.

More coddling of degenerates by the sports machine. What a freaking joke.

retlaw in nj...I think the word "shot" is a big part of Burress being in prison, also he has had multiple run ins with the law. Delonte did not shoot anything or anyone. I'm not condoning illegally carrying weapons but possessing and firing are two very difrerent matters.

retlaw: ok, and Plaxico got off easy (he'll only serve 20 months after time off for good behavior)... He faced a minimum sentence of 3½ years if convicted at trial.
