It took longer than expected, but Alonzo Gee has finally re-signed with the Cavaliers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a league source said it’s a three-year deal worth about $10 million. The final year of the deal is not guaranteed.
Gee was a restricted free agent who was expected to return to the team even without the long-term deal. The two sides negotiated through the summer and finally agreed to the deal about three weeks before the start of training camp.
The deal was complicated by the fact Gee switched agents midway through negotiations. He ended the season and opened contract talks using Andre Buck as his agent before switching recently to Happy Walters.
Gee, 25, started 31 games last season and set career highs in scoring (10.6), rebounding (5.1), assists (1.8), steals (1.3), free-throw percentage (.788) and minutes per game (29.0). He averaged 11.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a starter and will enter training camp again competing with newly signed C.J. Miles for the starting job at small forward.
“From the start of free agency, we made it clear that re-signing Alonzo was important to us and we’re happy we’ve been able to do that,” Cavs General Manager Chris Grant said in a statement. “Alonzo has worked very hard to make the most of the opportunities he has had thus far, and it has been great to see his development and growth as a Cavalier. We’re excited he will be part of our team as our young group of players continues to grow together.”
