Will Middlebrooks’ fine rookie season for the Boston Red Sox is over.
The third baseman was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right wrist Saturday and Danny Valencia was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Pedro Ciriaco was in manager Bobby Valentine’s lineup Saturday as the third baseman, hitting ninth, but Valencia, who was acquired in a trade from Minnesota last Sunday, was expected to arrive in time for Boston’s 6:05 p.m. start against the Cleveland Indians.
Middlebrooks, hitting .288 with 15 homers and 54 RBI in 75 games, was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning Friday night.
He is the 25th Red Sox player to go on the disabled list in 29 separate stints this year.
More surgery for Reds’ Votto
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto returned to Cincinnati to have cartilage removed from his surgically repaired left knee.
Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that Votto felt soreness in his knee after a sliding drill. Votto underwent a six-minute procedure Friday night.
If rehab goes well, he is expected to return to the Reds in about 10 days.
The 2010 NL MVP had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage on July 17 after he was injured sliding into third base.
Before that surgery, Votto was batting .342 with 14 homers and 49 RBI. He was leading the NL in doubles, walks, on-base percentage and extra-base hits.
Sore elbow sidelines Sabathia
New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation and pain in his elbow. A corresponding roster move was not announced.
Sabathia, 12-3 with a 3.56 ERA, missed 18 games earlier this season with a strained left groin. Sabathia, the 2007 AL Cy Young award winner, felt stiff after his Aug. 3 start against Seattle but an MRI showed nothing. Sabathia felt stiff again after pitching at Detroit on Aug. 8. He threw on flat ground Friday.
Street injured covering first
San Diego Padres placed closer Huston Street, who has converted all 21 saves opportunities this season, on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-handed reliever Cory Burns from Triple-A Tucson. Street was injured in the ninth inning of Friday night’s 9-8 win over the Padres when he went to cover first base on a game-ending groundout.
