Dave Pulk has distinguished himself as one of the best area amateur golfers, yet he never has won the Summit County Amateur Golf Championship.
Well, at least, not yet.
After a 5-under-par-66 performance on Saturday, Pulk is in first place and halfway toward winning the 34th annual tournament at J.E. Good Park Golf Course.
''I made a lot more putts than I have lately,'' Pulk said. ''I made seven birdies, had two bogeys and had 28 putts. I have been averaging 34 putts.''
Pulk, 52, birdied Nos. 2, 3, 5, 11, 12, 15 and 18. His birdie on No. 3 came on a 30-foot putt.
Pulk, who has won the past three ADGA Golfer of the Year tournament titles, played at Coventry High School and Kent State University. He graduated from Coventry in 1974 and pursued a double major at KSU, earning degrees in economics and business management and graduating summa cum laude in 1978. He plays regularly at Lake Forest Country Club in Hudson.
''I have played Good Park a number of times and this is the best round I have had,'' said Pulk, who is a consultant for Win Plastic, a company he founded in 1995 and owned until 2007.
Matt Heestand and Vaughn Snyder are tied for second with 69 and Dave Oates, the two-time defending tournament champion who has three total tournament titles, is fourth with a 70.
''I kept the ball straight, hit greens in regulation and just made some putts,'' said Heestand, who played golf and graduated from Parma Normandy and Cleveland State.
Heestand, 26, said he was thinking of his father, Don, who died in June from a rare brain disease at age 62.
''It was a special round for me. I thought about him a lot today,'' Heestand said.
