The private-club team held a 9-5 lead over the public-course team Saturday after two rounds of the Shaw Cup charity golf tournament at Ohio Prestwick Country Club in Uniontown.
The private side, which is captained by Tim Edwards, had a 4› - 2› lead after the seven best-ball matches in the morning. That was the same score in the afternoon in the seven alternative-shot matches.
The tournament concludes today with 14 individual matches at Weymouth Country Club in Medina, starting at 11 a.m.
For the private team Saturday, partners Kurt Peterson and Mike Riley went 2-0 in their matches together.
Dan Belden Jr. and Brian Belden went 2-0, winning their morning match together. Dan Belden then played with Tom Skidmore in the afternoon and Brian Belden played with Don Padgett III in the afternoon.
For the public team, which is captained by Joe Ungvary Jr., senior players Jim Cea, Ron Bell, Fred Miller and Rob Yanko had 1› points each.
By winning in 2010, the public team has an 8-5-3 edge in the event, which was first held in 1995.
Proceeds from the amateur tournament go to the Akron General Edwin Shaw Rehab Institute Challenge Golf program.
