Cleveland St. Ignatius 38, Canton McKinley 14
Despite turning the ball over four times, Cleveland St. Ignatius beat host Canton McKinley in a Division I Region 1 first round game. The Wildcats (7-4) led at halftime 17-7 and then outscored the Bulldogs (9-2) in the second-half 21-7.
Michael Vitale ran 19 times for 127 yards with an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead Ignatius.
Eric Glover-Williams ran for 68 yards, and threw for seven and caught three Bryce Short passes for 70 yards. Short’s 60-yard scoring pass to Glover-Williams midway through the second quarter tied the score at 14.
Ignatius responded with scores on a field goal, punt return and two short runs.
Ignatius will face Hudson in a second-round game.
Chippewa 62, Columbia Station 28
Chippewa, in the state tournament for the first time since 1999, earned its second-ever tournament win, beating Division V Region 16’s top-seeded Columbia Station.
Bailey Breitenstine threw for two touchdowns, and the Chipps’ defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
Stoney Epling and Austin Durbin each returned interceptions for touchdowns for 51 and 43 yards, respectively.
Cleveland Heights 35, Wadsworth 7
Running the ball 52 times for 306 yards, and controlling the clock by doing so, allowed Cleveland Heights to post a Division I, Region 1 win at Wadsworth. Senior running back Marcus Bagley carried the ball 33 times for 189 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers (10-1).
Taylor Jones recovered a Wadsworth fumble in the end zone in the first quarter and added a second score on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Taz Pauldo in the second. Cleveland Heights scored on its first three possessions of the second half to put the game away.
Senior back Greg Young had 32 yards rushing and Wadsworth’s (9-2) only touchdown. Senior Scott Campbell ran six times for 45 yards.
Fairless 51, Black River 28
Fairless (8-3) moves on in Division V Region 15, by dominating the Pirates (7-4) on the road. Fairless will face Manchester in a second-round game.
