Archbishop Hoban senior football players LaTroy Lewis and Greg McMullen will suit up again and play for the same team at 4 p.m. on April 20 at Ohio Stadium.
The Hoban defensive ends are scheduled to compete for the North in the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association annual North-South Classic.
Lewis signed a national letter of intent to play for Tennessee last week, and McMullen signed to play for Nebraska.
Canton McKinley will have three seniors playing for the North: Tyler Foster (Ohio Dominican), Jermaine Edmondson (Michigan State) and Malcolm Robinson (Buffalo).
Aurora also has two participants for the North: Anthony Melchiori (Kent State) and Troy Watson (Ohio).
Other senior players who are scheduled to play for the North are: Wadsworth’s Jack Snowball (Miami of Ohio), St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Kevin Besser (Walsh), Massillon’s Alex Winters (Ashland), Norwayne’s Adam Wallace (Ashland), Manchester’s Tony Matteo (West Virginia), Streetsboro’s Alex Todd (Indiana) and Minerva’s Kyle Crum (Kent State).
Rex Lingruen of Liberty Center will coach the North team, and Mike Mauk of Kenton will coach the South team. Mauk’s son, Kenton senior quarterback Maty Mauk, is slated to play for the South.
Minerva’s Dale Soles and Aurora’s Bob Mihalik will be assistant coaches for the North.
More football
Six former players from the North-South Classic were on the sidelines during Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday between the New York Giants and New England Patriots.
It was the 44th time in the 46 years of the Super Bowl that at least one player who played in the North-South Classic has held a roster spot for a Super Bowl team.
Five of the six players were on the victorious Giants: Mario Manningham, Jimmy Cordle, Greg Jones, Jake Ballard and Chase Blackburn (who also played for the University of Akron).
Brian Hoyer plays for the Patriots.
Patriots Matt Light, Zoltan Mesko and Antwaun Molden are other Ohio high school graduates.
College signings
• St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Tessa Weigand has signed to continue her academic and athletic careers at Ohio University where she will run cross country and track and field for the Bobcats. Weigand helped St. V-M win three consecutive Division II state cross country titles and also contributed on the Fighting Irish state championship 3,200-meter relay in the 2010 Division II state track and field meet. The Irish 1,600 relay was state runner-up in 2011 and the 3,200 relay was third in 2011. She placed 10th in the 800 in 2011.
• Tallmadge senior Drew Stadelman will further his academic and athletic careers with the Tiffin University men’s soccer team.
Wrestling
Archbishop Hoban will host rivals St. Vincent-St. Mary and Walsh Jesuit for a wrestling tri-match at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
St. V-M coach Anthony Gary said his team is rounding into form with the recent return of senior Ray Stone to practice at 220 pounds. Stone, who has been out due to injury since early December, might not wrestle Wednesday, but Gary expects him to compete in the postseason in two weeks.
Fighting Irish junior Mike Rix is having a solid season at 120 pounds after winning a Division II state title at 103 last season.
The Knights, Irish and Warriors do not fill up all 14 weight classes, meaning there will be forfeits on Wednesday.
“We haven’t been a dual match team since I have been coaching here,” Gary said. “I tell my kids that I want them to represent themselves. I want them to do the best they can, and obviously try to win for the team, too. Giving up forfeits at four or five weight classes is tough though because you’re giving up 24 to 30 points per dual. It is tough to win a dual match for us.”
Gary said sophomore Aaron Adkins (182) has placed at all five of the tournaments in which St. V-M has competed.
Gary is also pleased with the performances of sophomores Ryan Skonieczny (132) and Walter Gibson (126) and freshmen Dre’k Brumley (285) and John Chell (106).
“I think our kids are near peaking at the right time,” Gary said. “We have a very demanding schedule and I push them a lot. They are starting to grow up and mature.”
