High school roundup: Firestone takes team title; Ellet’s Ben Cockerham is medalist in City Series golf

Firestone 314, Ellet 330

Ellet senior Ben Cockerham earned the medalist honor Tuesday in the City Series Golf Championship at Mud Run Golf Course and Firestone won its fourth team title in a row.

Cockerham and Firestone sophomore Brian Schultz each shot 2-over-par-70s, but Cockerham triumphed after making a birdie on the first hole, No. 1, in a sudden-death playoff.

Ellet coach Lonnie Kammer said Cockerham’s final putt came from 13 feet away.

Firestone won with a team score of 314 and Ellet shot 330. Falcons coach Dave Milo said Schultz (70), junior Jonathon Giaquinto (79), sophomore Sam DiMeo (79) and sophomore Alex Erisey (86) scored for the Falcons.

Ellet junior Joel Beswetherick placed fifth with an 81.

Girls golf

Greater Akron Girls Golf League Championship

St. Vincent-St. Mary came away with the tournament title, edging Southeast by 2 strokes, 373 to 375 at the par-70 Firestone Public Golf Course.

Emma Noethen led the Fighting Irish with a 19-over 89.

Sophomore Macie Hysell shot a 16-over 86 to lead the Pirates and was also named Player of the Year.

Archbishop Hoban’s Morgan Stubbendieck shot a tournament low 14-over 84.

Girls soccer

Southeast 3, Field 1

Freshman Erin Fisher scored twice for host Pirates (7-1-1).

Senior Jillian Fesemyer had a goal and assisted on another.

The Falcons drop to 1-8-1.

Garrettsville 4, Waterloo 0

Caytlin Armstrong scored twice for the G-Men (5-5, 3-3).

Freshman keepers Brenna Tabor and Taylor Brown combined for eight saves.

Boys soccer

Firestone 3, North 0

Senior Richard Milford scored all three goals and the host Falcons improved to 7-2-1, 2-0-0 City Series.

His first goal was a direct kick, the second was on a penalty kick and the third was assisted by brother Lucien Milford.

Nemanya Jandric and Andrew Walsh led the defensive attack for the Falcons and keeper Moises Villalba made five saves to hold the Vikings (5-3-0, 1-1-0) scoreless.
