Buckeye 8, St. Vincent-St. Mary 7
Senior Tom Metheney hit a solo walk-off home run in the seventh inning to lift the host Bucks (17-7) over the Irish (10-14) in an Akron Division II sectional final Tuesday.
Senior Joe Bruening smacked a three-run home run for Buckeye and senior Robbie Nonamaker hit a solo homer. Junior pitcher Eli Kraus, a Kent State recruit, got the win and is 7-0.
“It was an amazing game,” Buckeye coach Steve Wright said. “St. Vincent-St. Mary is a really good team. We ended up having a defensive replacement come to bat and hit a walk-off home run. Unbelievable.”
Nordonia 12, Green 8
Senior Scott Klein doubled, homered and drove in two runs and the visiting Knights (19-7, 12-1) defeated the Bulldogs (6-17, 6-7) to win the Suburban League.
Senior Matt McRitchie singled twice and drove in two runs and senior Ryan Bauer singled, doubled and scored three runs for the Knights.
“This group of guys is doing great,” first-year coach Nordonia coach Drew Hoisington said. “Just coming in here and being a whole new coaching staff, everybody really bought in to what we were talking about. This puts us on the right track and puts this program back to where it needs to be.
“Winning the league title with a lot of the tough teams that we play against is a great accomplishment for us and for this group of [nine] seniors.”
Ellet 12, Tallmadge 9
Andrew Knicely singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Andrew Myers and Cody Martin each had two RBI for the visiting Orangemen (14-7) in a win over the Blue Devils (10-11).
Tallmadge 8, CVCA 1
Senior Scott Noel had an RBI double and seven strikeouts in the complete-game win over the Royals in an Akron Division II sectional game. Senior Zach Skraba singled twice and drove in two runs for the Blue Devils (11-11).
Springfield 7, Coventry 2
Sophomore Deanna Cole tied the Division II state record with her 62nd stolen base of the season and senior Lydia Sanner singled, doubled and homered for the host Spartans (22-3, 12-1 PTC-Metro) in a win over the Comets (14-9, 7-5).
Senior Quartni Whited struck out nine for her 19th win of the season and also singled twice, doubled and drove in a run for the Spartans.
Firestone 9, Copley 3
Senior Quinn Lentz singled, doubled twice, tripled, drove in two runs and scored four runs to lead the Falcons (12-13) over the Indians (3-20) in a Barberton Division I sectional semifinal.
Montana Hollis doubled, tripled and drove in three runs and Daisha Dancy hit a three-run home run to lead the Indians.
Ellet 16, Garfield 0
Sophomore Madison Hayes doubled, homered and drove in five runs and sophomore Laura Lakins singled, doubled, tripled and drove in a run for the Orangemen (12-11) in a Barberton Division I sectional win.
Green 10, Massillon 8
Sophomore Julia Guyton singled, homered and drove in five runs and junior Paige Darnell-Smith hit a two-run home run to lead the Bulldogs (9-19) to a Massillon Division I sectional win.
St. Vincent-St. Mary 1, Chippewa 1
Junior Nicole Paolucci hit the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning and freshman Lexi Handley allowed three hits and struck out 17 to lead the host Fighting Irish (11-7). Sophomore Jackie Musci scored the winning run.
