Division III: Orrville (18-12) vs. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (28-2) at 4 p.m. today in a state semifinal. The other semifinal features Coldwater (28-4) and Wheelersburg (24-6) at 7 p.m. The Division III state championship will be at 1 p.m. Saturday.
A look at Orrville: The Red Riders feature seven seniors: Wes Stauffer, Stuart Schley, J.T. Perez, Chandler Smith, Kyle Ritchie, Layne Scheufler and Chad Harrison. Stauffer is 6-0 pitching with a 1.12 ERA. Schley is 5-4 with a 1.71 ERA pitching and is batting .330 with seven homers, 32 RBI and 24 runs scored. Perez is batting .400 with three homers and 28 RBI. Sophomore Christian Trowbridge also starts along with freshmen Austin Domer and Zach Ramsdell. “We wanted to make to it state,” Orrville coach Scott Marshall said. “The last several years, we have improved every year. We have seven seniors and five of the seven started as a freshmen.” Orrville won its third district title in a row two weeks ago and earned its state berth with a regional title last week. The Red Riders were a district semifinalist in 2011, a regional semifinalist in 2012 and a regional finalist in 2013. Orrville beat Tuslaw and Canton Central Catholic at district and Independence and Youngstown Ursuline at regional. Orrville swept North Royalton in a doubleheader.
Division I: North Royalton (21-7) will meet Gahanna Lincoln (17-12) at 10 a.m. Friday in a state semifinal and Jackson (25-5) will follow against Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller (24-4) at 1 p.m. Friday. The Division I state championship will be at 4 p.m. Saturday.
A look at Jackson: The Polar Bears are led by senior hitters Kyle Mottice, Seth Vellucci, Jake Miller and Michael McCann, sophomore pitcher Sam Miller and senior pitcher Tim Turner. “We have 14 seniors and 13 returning lettermen,” Jackson coach Bill Gamble said. Mottice is hitting .494 with 16 RBI and 30 runs. Jake Miller (.393, 28 RBI, 24 runs), Vellucci (.358, 18 runs, 15 RBI) and McCann (.324, 24 RBI, 14 runs) are also batting over .300. Sam Miller and Turner are both 7-0 pitching. Miller has a 0.89 ERA and Turner is at 1.08 ERA. Seniors A.J. Kloehn, Jake Sima and Brennan Dingler are also in the batting order with sophomore Jake Pallotta and junior Jacob Kempt.
A look at North Royalton: The Bears are led by coach Brad Klingbeil and secured regional wins over Lakewood St. Edward and Sylvania Southview last week after earning district wins over Strongsville and Cleveland St. Ignatius two weeks ago. Frank Frate and Noah Sasse are North Royalton’s top pitchers. Frate is 8-0. Some of the Bears’ key hitters are Garrett Strom, Tyler Pencak, Bryan Bielak, Evan Willmann, Jack Marousek, Nate Kocan, Dominick Pissini and Reese Albright.
