Ravens peck Falcons

Cousins lead Ravenna over previously unbeaten Field

RAVENNA: The Davis cousins and the rest of the Ravenna Ravens took their seats on the Portage County gridiron throne Friday night.

Host Ravenna defeated previously unbeaten Field 21-13 to capture sole possession of first place in the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division and increase its chances of making the state playoffs. The Ravens (7-2, 6-0) clinched at least a share of the PTC Metro crown and will have a chance to win the title outright when they face Springfield at home next week.

''This is the biggest win we've had in years,'' Ravenna coach Jim Lunardi said. ''We have another game left, and we respect our opponent. If it works out pointswise, then we're in (the playoffs).''

Ravenna's trio of star playmakers senior wide receiver/running back Jonathan Davis, senior fullback Roy Davis and junior tailback Blayre Davis carried the load for the Ravens. The three cousins have combined to score 22 touchdowns in their past five games.

Jonathan Davis carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards. His 1-yard rushing touchdown gave the Ravens a 14-7 lead with 7:48 left in the fourth quarter. He also threw a 28-yard touchdown strike to senior Bobby Clement on a halfback pass with 2:20 left in the game to give the Ravens the insurance they would need.

''Coach said I had to make some plays, so I got the ball and the line blocked good,'' Jonathan Davis said. ''I just was seeing the openings and making some big plays. It's a team effort 11 as one is what coach always tells us.''

Jonathan Davis, who also plays safety on defense, forced a fumble and blocked an extra-point kick in the fourth quarter to help Ravenna's defense prevent Field from coming back.

''Jonathan Davis took the game over,'' Lunardi said. ''He stood out.''

Field (8-1, 5-1) did not score until 10:47 remained in the fourth quarter, when senior running back Seth Koosed ran into the end zone from 1 yard out. Koosed scored on another 1-yard run with 20 seconds left in the game, but it was too late as Ravenna recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock for the win.

''We had our opportunities,'' Field coach Matt Furino said. ''Ravenna played a good game, they didn't make mistakes and we did. I'm not questioning our heart at all. Our kids played as hard as they could.''

The Ravenna defense opened the game by forcing Field to punt after its first four plays from scrimmage. The Ravens then started a 10-play, 88-yard scoring march that was fueled by 10 carries from the Davis cousins.

Roy Davis jump-started the drive with a 40-yard run. Then, with 4:12 left in the first quarter, he finished it with a 4-yard touchdown run. Senior Cory Fosnight made the extra-point kick to give the Ravens a 7-0 lead that they would hold at halftime.

Field had a golden opportunity to tie the score midway through the second quarter, but Ravenna's defense wouldn't budge. Field marched 69 yards in 11 plays to the Ravenna 1-yard line but was stopped on fourth-and-goal when Roy Davis and Ravens defensive tackles Chris Hudson and Brad Hager stuffed Falcons fullback Tom Wiant for no gain.

''We came up short a lot of times,'' Furino said. ''Not scoring down (at the goal line), that's a definite killer.''
