Area football players
win All-Ohio honors

Several area football players earned all-state honors Wednesday.

Northwestern senior linebacker Shawn Sheridan was named the 2007 Associated Press Division V Defensive Player of the Year. Teammate Mat Schaefer was named a first team All-Ohio kicker.

Others who made first-team All-Ohio were St. Thomas Aquinas offensive lineman Justin Ray, Waynedale running back Thad Nofsinger and Smithville punter Eric Lee.

Hillsdale's Tom Williams was named one of the Coaches of the Year.

In Division VI, Mogadore offensive lineman Zack Trainer was named to the All-Ohio first team along with teammate Cody Destro, a running back.

And Mr. Football hails from Northeast Ohio.

Mentor senior quarterback Bart Tanski won the 21st annual Associated Press Mr. Football award, given annually to the state's top high school player.

Tanski, 6 feet 2, 190 pounds, threw for 2,385 yards and 20 touchdowns and led Mentor to a 7-2 regular season record. He's also leading the Cardinals in the Division I state championship game Friday against Cincinnati St. Xavier.
