The Wadsworth wrestling team continued to prove that veteran leadership sometimes can be overrated.
With strong performances from two freshmen, four sophomores and a junior, the Grizzlies won the 48th annual North Canton Holiday Wrestling Invitational by finishing with 186.5 points in the team standings Saturday.
Lake (160.5) placed second, and University School (155) took third.
''They came in hungry and a little bit more relaxed than usual,'' Wadsworth coach John Gramuglia said of his team, which has no seniors on its roster. ''They weren't worried about every little mistake they made.''
Wadsworth sophomore Brad Squire defeated University School sophomore Harrison Hightower by a 7-2 decision to win the championship in the 130-pound weight class.
With the victory, Squire, a defending Division I state champion, improved his career high school record to 48-0. Two weeks ago, Squire captured a title at one of the nation's most prestigious tournaments the Walsh Jesuit Ironman.
''Last year, he didn't know how good he was going to be,'' Gramuglia said of Squire. ''I think now he knows he's in that upper echelon of kids. He always knew he could be this good, but now he's proved it.''
Freshman Alfredo Gray (103) and sophomore Bart Randolph (171) placed second for the Grizzlies. Junior Alex Gray (112) took third, and freshman Clay Wenger (119) and sophomore Ben Buzzelli (285) had fourth-place finishes. Grizzlies teammates, sophomore Josh Otanicar and freshman Nate Ball, faced each other and finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 145-pound weight class.
Senior Chad Rhoades (145) defeated Nordonia junior Charlie Williams by a 10-5 decision to capture a title and lead Lake.
Kenmore, which finished sixth with 129 points, had three champions: seniors Isaiah Chapman (125) and William Sheppard (140) and sophomore Cody Lamberg (189).
Seniors Erik Schott (160) and Matt Betz (285) won titles for Marlington, which placed eighth with 113.5 points.
Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy senior Jared Kusar (152) also won a title.
