Formerly of Massillon, Stacy seeks continued success with Bulldogs

GREEN: When former Massillon football coach Tom Stacy was announced as the new coach at Green during a news conference Tuesday afternoon, he was enthusiastic and energized.
He said he was looking forward to a fresh start.
That's why he hadn't even looked at Green's roster.
''I did that on purpose,'' Stacy said. ''I want to come in with fresh ideas. Everyone has a clean slate. I've done that everywhere I've been, and it gives the players a different perspective.''
In attendance at the news conference were most of the members of the football team, and Stacy had a strong message.
''A lot of people say you can't win a state championship in the suburbs,'' he said. ''I think we can.''
Stacy coached at Massillon
the past six seasons, three as the head coach. He said he has no hard feelings toward anyone associated with Massillon.
''As they say, once a Tiger always a Tiger,'' Stacy said. ''We accomplished a lot in the six years I was there, three years an assistant coach and three years as the head coach.''
Stacy compiled a 26-11 record. In 2005, the Tigers finished the season 13-2 as Division I state runners-up. In 2006, Massillon reached the playoffs and finished 7-5.
Last year, the Tigers posted a 6-4 record. Five opponents reached the state playoffs.
It was a season filled with adversity, and Stacy said most people can't comprehend what it's like to coach at the school.
''With the boosters, the Touchdown Club, the television and radio shows plus having to prepare the team for a game, it was a very difficult job,'' Stacy said. ''There was pressure and a lot of expectations, and it's the same here.''
Stacy coached at the University of Akron from 1995 to 2003, where he was the quarterbacks coach. One of his pupils was former Browns quarterback Charlie Frye.
Stacy takes over for Elden McVicker, who had a 74-37 record in 10 seasons. Under McVicker, Green made it to the state semifinals in 2001. The Bulldogs qualified for the playoffs five times and won four Suburban League titles with McVicker.
''Elden did a great job in the 40 years he has been here at the school, the last 10 years as the head coach,'' Green Athletic Director Mark Pfaff said. ''If you look back, we've had quality coaches here and we're adding to that list with a man like Tom Stacy.''
