Stow 52, Tallmadge 44 The victory by the Bulldogs on Wednesday night at Stow provided coach Dave Close with win No. 400 in his coaching career.
In three years at Painesville Riverside and 20 years at Stow, Close has a career record of 400-130. The Bulldogs moved to 11-8 with the win, meaning that Close has not had a losing season at Stow.
''What it means to me is that I have had great kids who have made a commitment to doing well,'' Close said. ''With the tradition we have, kids want to live up to the standards of those who played before them.''
The Bulldogs took control of the nonleague game with a 13-2 margin in the third quarter.
Blake Williams had 12 points and Jeff Steiger had 11 for Stow. Jonathan Lampley led the Blue Devils (13-5) with 15 points.
Archbishop Hoban 82, Mentor Lake Catholic 55 Senior guard Mitch Dorfman scored 18 points on five 3-pointers and had three assists to lead the host Knights (17-2) over the Cougars (10-9) in a North Coast League game. Junior forward Brian Slack had 15 points and six rebounds, and junior forward Theo Barnes added 13 points and six rebounds for Hoban. Hoban, which has won 17 games in a row, will host NCL rival Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph on Friday night.
Wadsworth 81, Firestone 75 Junior guard Alan Sheppard scored 24 points to lead the host Grizzlies (8-11) over the City Series champion Falcons (17-3) in overtime. Sheppard made two free throws with 10 seconds to go and then made a 3-pointer from 25 feet with 1.3 seconds to go to force overtime. Sophomore center Anthony Schrock added 19 points and 13 rebounds. Firestone senior guard Robert Johnson had 23 points, and senior forward Jacob Pope had 20 points. Ramel Mitchell (ankle), the two-time City Series Player of the Year, did not play for Firestone.
North Canton Hoover 68, St. Vincent-St. Mary 61 Senior guard J.D. Elder scored a season-high 34 points to lead the host Vikings (14-6) past the Irish (12-7). Elder had 15 points in the fourth quarter. Daylen Harrison scored 21 points for St. V-M, and Demetrius Brinson had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Copley 70, Ellet 47 Devon Smith scored 16 points and Rob Moss had 14 to lead the host Indians (12-7) over Ellet (3-16) in a nonleague game.
Hudson 50, Nordonia 49 Junior forward Colin Geaney hit an eight-foot turnaround jump shot in the final seconds to give the Explorers (10-9) an upset over the host Knights (16-3) in a Northeast Ohio Conference game.
Barberton 73, Cuyahoga Falls 61 Sophomore forward Jacob North scored 19 points and senior guard Steven Pitts had 18 points to lead the visiting Magics (15-4) past the Black Tigers (2-17). Anthony Longhitano had 18 points for Cuyahoga Falls.
Perry 48, Canton Central Catholic 37 Senior center Kenny Frease, a Xavier University recruit, scored 29 points to lead the host Panthers (17-2) over the Crusaders (8-10).
Rootstown 85, Mogadore 45 Seniors Kyle McCully and Chad Luckie combined for 11 3-pointers and 51 points to lead the host Rovers (7-13, 4-10) over Mogadore (0-16, 2-17) in a Portage Trail Conference game.
Girls basketball
Struthers 62, Southeast 55 Southeast saw its unbeaten season come to an end against Struthers in an Austintown Fitch Division II sectional final. The Pirates (21-1) fell behind 18-6 after one quarter. Lindsay Speidel scored 21 points and Mya Levels had 19 for Southeast, which finished second in the final state media poll in Division II.
Field 67, Tallmadge 56 Traci Vandegrift had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Alex Polasky added 18 as the Falcons (18-3) defeated Tallmadge (9-12) in a Uniontown Division II sectional game at Lake.
Chagrin Falls 60, Buchtel 53 Buchtel's Cassandra McGinnis, Gloria Brown and Monet Maxwell combined for 43 points, but it wasn't enough as the Griffins (12-9) lost in overtime to Chagrin Falls (18-3) in a Uniontown Division II sectional game at Lake.
Norton 48, Woodridge 45 The Panthers (10-10) closed with an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to edge the host Bulldogs (12-8) in the Portage Trail Conference. Sophomore Natalie Cook scored all 16 of her points in the second half. Morgan Korinek of Woodridge scored 13 points to become the program's career scoring leader.
Girls bowling
Archbishop Hoban 1,841, Wadsworth 1,547 The Knights moved their record to 9-2 overall by beating the Grizzlies at Great Oak Lanes in Wadsworth. Senior Megan Allen led Hoban with a 196 game and a 362 series.
