Division II tennis
Alex Aleman of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy won the 2008 Division II boys district tennis tournament singles competition by beating Poland's Ben Brocker in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 Saturday at Weis Park.
Both competitors, along with Orange's Josh Berggrun and University's Zak Kelm, already had earned the right to advance to the state tournament by placing in the top four. Michael Fredericka became the fifth and final state qualifier by beating CVCA's Chad Thompson in the playback round final.
The Beachwood team of Mark Goldberg and Grant Aronson won the doubles competition over the University tandem of Steven Shin and Seth Udelson (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2). Canton Central Catholic's Jon Esber and Colin Bernier beat Poland's Ryan Teckchandani and Zubin Teckchandani 6-4, 6-2 to take third place. All four teams advanced to the state tournament.
Central Catholic had a chance to slip its second doubles team, consisting of Seth Laubacher and Eduardo Romany, into the state tournament, but the two were unable to beat Hawken's David Gerson and Charlie Marks in the playback round final. They fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
The state tournament will be Friday and Saturday at Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus.
Division I tennis
Shaker Heights' Tommy Marx beat Dylan Schrode of Solon 6-3, 6-2 to win the singles competition of the Northeastern Ohio Division I district tournament at Tri-City Park in Rocky River.
Avon Lake's Alex Trzeciak, Wooster's Seth Duffy, Kenston's Nolan Marks and Shaker Height's David Gabriel will all be heading to the state tournament.
In the doubles competition, Boardman's Scott Warden and Robert Salcedo beat Hudson's Matt McErlean and Alex Hughes 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the final. Joining them in the state tournament will be the teams of Aaron Robbins and Greg Woyczynski (Shaker Heights), Alex Kearney and Kevin Bus (North Olmsted), Ryan Mellion and Matt Sloan (Jackson) and Billy Smith and Matt Dunmead (Solon).
Division II track
The CVCA girls track team took home first-place honors in the Division II distract track meet Saturday at Jack Britt Memorial Field in Painesville. Juniors Jeannette Pettigrew and Katie Gillespie both won two events to lead the Royals. Pettigrew won the 100-meter dash (12.65 seconds) and the 200 (25.45). She also anchored the winning 400 relay team that featured junior Brittainy Erby, sophomore Taylor James and senior Katie Engerer (49.09; 2.). Gillespie won the 1,600-meter (5:03.19) and 3,200-meter run (11:05.65).
