North Canton Hoover (30-2) vs. Grove City (28-3)
What: Division I state semifinal.
When/where: 3 p.m. today at Firestone Stadium, Akron.
Coaches: Jerry Goodpasture for North Canton; Ted Williams for Grove City.
Next step: The winner plays at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for the state championship against the winner of the semifinal between Elyria (27-1) and Mason (24-8).
Notebook: In the final state coaches poll, Grove City finished second and Hoover was third. . . . The Vikings will be going for their fourth state championship in as many tries. . . . Hoover has seven starters back from its 2006 state champions, including Division I college recruits Jessica Simpson (Miami), Megan Lilley (Northwestern), Felicia Houtz (Akron), Sarah Gerber (Eastern Michigan) and McKenna Russ (Eastern Michigan). . . . Grove City is in the state tournament for the fifth time but the first since 1998. The Greyhounds won the 1983 title and were second twice (1984 and 1989). . . . Grove City has only one senior and is led by sophomore pitcher Paige Myers (26-1), who has 16 shutouts and five no-hitters. . . . The Greyhounds defeated Federal League members Jackson 7-0 and Perry 3-0 in April.
