Steve Yung's four TDs lead Aurora to Div. III state semifinals

SOLON: Walsh Jesuit might have thought it was playing the Division III Region 9 championship game against Aurora at Solon's Stewart Field on Saturday night.
But the Warriors were actually in ''Yung's Town.''
Aurora running back Steve Yung made Stewart Field his world and was nearly unstoppable. Yung, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior, finished with a game-high 159 yards and scored four touchdowns (he averaged 9.9 yards a carry) as the Greenmen defeated the Warriors 28-7 to advance to the state semifinals next weekend.
''You can't say enough about our offensive line,'' Aurora coach Bob Mihalik said. ''Our guys got it done up front, and our defense was strong, too.''
Those players Mihalik was referring to were center Ben Jubell, guards Nick DePompei and Jake Rose, tackles Adam Bellamy and Rob Kirk and tight ends Mitchell Knapp and Tim Gardner. The Greenmen (11-2) reach the state semifinals for the first time since 2006, when they beat Walsh Jesuit 17-7.
''I know a lot of people felt we snuck up on them a few years ago, but after this win, we feel we are one of the elite programs in Division III and I'm not being arrogant,'' Mihalik said.
With a strong wind whipping snow flurries around the field, it was obvious that there would be no passing game by either team. That was fine with Yung.
He didn't mind being the featured back, and with an offensive line that gave him plenty of holes to bounce through, Yung carried his team on his back.
''At the beginning of the week, Coach said the game would be up to the offensive line and those guys did their job,'' Yung said. ''All the credit goes to those guys.''
Walsh senior running back Armand Dehaney had an outsized workload, too. Dehaney, a Ball State recruit, finished with 139 yards on 28 carries.
Aurora's first score was set up by a roughing-the-kicker penalty.
Aurora punter Andy Heacox was back waiting to take the snap for a punt when the ball slipped out of his hands and hit the ground. Heacox recovered and got the punt off but a Walsh defender, who was trying to block the punt, was penalized for running into Heacox.
Aurora kept possession, and a few plays later, Yung scored on a 28-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Greenmen lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter.
Walsh coach Gerry Rardin, meanwhile, thought that Heacox could be tackled because the ball hit the ground.
''It's a weird rule,'' Rardin said. ''It looked like the ball hit the ground and our kids were going after a runner.''
Aurora went ahead 14-0 in the early minutes of the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run by Yung.
It wasn't until the final minutes of the second quarter that Walsh (9-3) cut the Greenmen's lead to 14-7 after Warriors quarterback Kyle Snyder scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:14 left before halftime.
However, the play that might have deflated Walsh came right after Snyder's touchdown.
The Warriors had finally scored and were starting to build some momentum.
But there was still time for Yung to make something big happen, and he did. He broke out for a 65-yard touchdown run with 1:55 left for a 21-7 Aurora lead.
''We had the momentum going at halftime and we just had to come out at halftime like it was 0-0,'' Yung said. ''We needed to keep that momentum.''
And the Greenmen did.
Yung scored on a 27-yard touchdown run with 2:48 left in the third quarter, which gave the Greenmen a 28-7 lead.
''Both teams had to run the ball and they did it better than we did,'' Rardin said.
