SOLON: Neither Walsh Jesuit nor Mentor Lake Catholic could get close enough to get off many shots in a Division II soccer regional semifinal at Solon High School Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, Lake Catholic had a few long-range bombers who could make up for it.
Lake Catholic junior Scottie Scaperato blasted a 26-footer into the top left corner of the net midway through the second half and senior Jacob Lubbe finished off Emmanuel Valderrama's 40-yard free kick off the cross bar eight minutes later to give the Cougars a 2-1 win.
''Those long shots from outside, man-o-my,'' Walsh Jesuit coach John Kissner said. ''That was a difference in the game. They didn't have many chances, but the ones they did have they capitalized and made them count.''
Neither team was able to find much room on offense. The Warriors (7-8-4) had just four shots on goal; Lake Catholic (13-4-2) had eight.
''We tried to penetrate their defense, but they had so many people back there,'' Kissner said. ''Whichever team scored first I think in this game was going to be the telling blow.''
Nearly 60 minutes passed before that first goal was scored, Scaperato's long shot.
The Warriors had their chances early. Midway through the first half, Walsh Jesuit junior defender Ryan Krause sent a perfect volley to sophomore forward Ross Martin in front of the net.
Martin redirected the pass into the back of the net for what appeared to be a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Martin was called offsides on the play.
''It's a game of inches,'' Kissner said. ''Just being offsides in that situation. If we score that goal, it becomes a different game. You have to have the breaks and we certainly didn't have the breaks today, but we kept fighting and working hard and that's all you can ask for.''
With the game still scoreless, the Cougars' long bombers had a chance to excel.
Although Valderrama did not score a goal, he had four of Lake Catholic's eight shots and the assists on both goals.
His 40-yard free kick off the crossbar bounced in front of the net, where Walsh Jesuit goalkeeper Ryan Vellequette was unable to corral it. Lubbe happened to be right there to kick it past him.
Walsh Jesuit senior Ben Bukovec gave the Warriors their lone goal with 2 minutes and 28 seconds remaining when he followed a botched save with a kick in the box.
