Stow wins, earns berth in Div. I regional final

Wadsworth eliminated by Painesville Riverside

By Jim Isabella
Special to the Beacon Journal

HUDSON: A bunch of boys dressed in full bee-keepers outfits arrived at Hudson High School's Hyser Gymnasium.

These crazy fans were hoping that the Stow volleyball team's surprising postseason would continue at the Hudson Division I regional by caging a bunch of very active Bees from Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

The Cinderella Bulldogs kept their dancing shoes on by defeating the Bees 3-1.

Stow (14-11) will play Painesville Riverside (24-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hyser for the regional championship.

Stow coach Scott Carter's team did not look like it had a 13-11 record coming into the regional.

The Bulldogs were both confident and assertive from the first points of the match.

''We were 5-9 midway through the season and we had some volleyball maturing to do,'' Carter said. ''We changed our practices and worked on some individual things at each practice and we ended up blending it all together.

''We are riding a high right now by winning nine of our last 11 matches.''

The Bulldogs won the first game 25-22, rallying from a 22-20 deficit. After a 12-12 tie in the second game, the Bulldogs took control and won 25-18.

Brecksville-Broadview Heights battled back in the third game after being behind 9-2 to win 25-21.

The Bulldogs asserted themselves in the fourth game after a 7-7 tie and took a 19-10 lead.

The Bees rallied to close the gap to 19-16, and the teams exchanged points before senior Colleen Bonacci's kill gave Stow a 25-22 win.

Sophomore Kelly Vitt was terrific in leading the Bulldogs in assists with 41 and aces with seven.

Charlotte Sykora had 11 kills, and Lizzy McDade had 28 digs.

In the other semifinal, Wadsworth's third trip to the regional ended with a 3-1 loss to red-hot Painesville Riverside. For the first two games and the early portion of the third, the Grizzlies (21-4) had no answers for the Beavers.

Riverside was in its first regional in school history after ending Mentor's streak of 21 consecutive district championships on Saturday in Euclid.

After losing the first two games 25-15 and 25-20, Wadsworth coach Terri Mason knew the bad start made it nearly impossible to pull off a comeback.

''We started too late. They just didn't play well,'' Mason said.

Behind 17-12, the Grizzlies' season looked like it was over.

Suddenly Wadsworth came alive, rallying to outscore the Beavers 13-6 and win the game 25-23.

The fourth game went back and forth, with 14 ties. Finally, the Beavers survived 25-23.

Wadsworth had solid games from senior Amanda Pallija (nine kills), junior Sarah White (18 assists), and freshman Haley Beavers (13 assists). Seniors Julie Bassett and Jenna Samsa each had 19 digs.

''This season we went above and beyond. Some things are just not meant to happen,'' said senior Adrienne Capotosta, who had eight kills.
