Hurt player's family
releases statement

Dan and Mariann Wiita, the parents of Highland football player Kory Wiita, have released their first public statement since their son's injury last Friday.

''We have been so thankful for all the prayers and good wishes,'' Dan Wiita said. ''But Kory would want kids to go out and play hard and focus on winning.''

Kory, a senior defensive back for the Hornets, fractured three vertebra in his neck while making a tackle in last Friday's game against Cloverleaf. He remains in critical condition at Akron Children's Hospital.

Players from Highland and Wadsworth have put Kory's No. 32 on their helmets. Highland plays Warren Howland in a Division II playoff game tonight, and the Howland players have signed his online guestbook.

''Kory would want nothing more to be at the game, but is fighting for his own type of victory,'' Mariann Wiita said. ''Kory is getting better and stronger each day. He knows everyone is rooting for him and feels the love and support of the community.''
